I would like to boot Ubuntu on my iMac Pro 2017 with Radeon Pro Vega 64. T2 Secure boot is deactivated. I tried it with Ubuntu 19.10 from an external usb ssd but I always get a black screen after the ubuntu boot menu. I guess it is a problem with missing drivers for the video card. If anyone has an idea it would be much appreciated.

G'day @Cerebroside and welcome.

Have you tried it with

nomodeset

in the startup parameters? I take it 19.10 is installed, is that so?

Back tomorrow

Hello and thanks for your reply!
I only get a text-only boot menu. Headline is GNU GRUB version 2.04
The options are
Try Ubuntu without installing => black screen
Try Ubuntu without installing (safe graphics) => black screen (this is the modeset option, isnt it?)
Install Ubuntu
Install Ubuntu (safe graphics)
OEM install
Check disk for errors

By pressing c[edited] e I can edit the startup options. I tried to edit the safe graphics settings from nomodeset to radeon.modeset=0 as I read in another forum.
But I also got a black screen.

OK so you have not installed yet, you are stuck with the live usb stick not going past the menu options.

What method did you use to burn the .iso, for example Etcher or other?

Yes, this is correct. I used Etcher on Mac to make the boot USB-Volume.

that should be 'e' for edit, c is for commands
