Bootloader Project

In engineering 4th year I was assigned project on Bootloader. Main aim of this project is to study theory of bootloaders working and implement a simple bootloader for a linux kernel. Please some one provide me some good resources which cleary explains bootloaders working and help me how to start it. Which tools will be necessary or recommended and which programming languages will be good for implementation?
