It's time for me to do some searching to help my best mate select hardware and build a brand new custom desktop.

I've got some questions before I start going to the mobo, gpu and the like manufacturer's websites.

My friend will be using this new build for everyday use. Linux will be his primary operating systems and most likely a triple booted rig.
He wants compatibility to be able to do medium gaming and video.

*Will the leads (power button and usb's 3.0) on his Fractal Design case plug into the newer mobo?

I've looked at the industrial mobo's that Asus and MSI make, however, they don't have onboard WiFi.
He would like to have a industrial/ruggedized mobo.
*Will I need to find a WiFi card for the mobo <or> a WiFi dongle?

In order to play Warframe and other games on Steam or Heroic Games with a Epic Games account I'm thinking he could create a Steam account or create an account with Epic Games. Having said that:
*What GPU (not Nvidia) should I look for that will have enough RAM and be able to perform efficiently for gaming ?

And lastly, how do I figure out how many cores and GHz's the CPU needs to be in order to handle gaming and everyday use for this new build?

if you are fitting an internal wi-fi to a desktop, make sure you have plenty of PCIe connectors on the board, or enough spare usb ports if you use a usb dongle,
to be honest as he doesn't need the latest greatest , I would look at getting a 3-5 year old reconditioned unit with an 8th or 9th gen I5 or I7 cpu or even something like this with the 8 core cpu

Finding a wireless card, be it USB or PCIe, that works with Linux should be a very-well planned purchase. Ensure that Linux compatibility exists before buying one. Many do not have Linux drivers.

don't worry about wifi on a desktop. it is pointless to use wifi on desktops. They are not moved around so put a wire on it. The wire will be faster, more secure and far more stable. The only reason to use wifi on a desktop is because it is not possible to get a wire to it. Otherwise use the wire, you'll be much happier with it. Most MoBo come with gigabit capable built in ethernet connectors on the board.

Because of the way things are in this setup wired is not an option.

I don't mean to be THAT PERSON, but what could be in the setup that would prevent you from using ethernet? I only ask because it makes your life simpler and your build more stable, especially for games that need online speed you can't beat the wire.
 
I'm looking online to find out if the new technology that changed (cables that come from the case ie: power button, usb and the like) are still on the newer mobo's.

I need to find 'clarification' on this because if the newer mobo's don't have the pins on the board for the lead cables coming from the front of the case, than I'll need to tell my friend that he will need to purchase a new case maybe.

I heard JayzTwoCents (YouTuber that builds pc's, knows hardware etc.) say in a video that some mobo manufacturers have changed that technology and it's handled some other way.

An apartment where you don't want to string an ethernet cable across several rooms and down a hallway because they internet comes in on the other side of the building...

I can think of other situations where going wired is more effort than it's worth - or even outright prohibited.

That said, you can bet your butt that I'd be running an ethernet cable across said rooms and through said hallway. I only deal with wireless on mobile devices and one single computer which I stupidly did not have wires run and jacks added for internet. None of the bedrooms have ethernet and I have a computer in my bedroom.

I could run cable and put in a jack. My walls have PVC pipes in them as conduit. Snaking in a CAT6 cable wouldn't take much time or effort. I just haven't bothered with it. The wireless has been 'good enough' for a bedroom computer.

Err... I was in a spectacular automobile wreck. I was a passenger but ended up being the one severely injured. (I even got a ride in a helicopter while high as all get out on very strong opiates!)

So, I had a desktop computer put in my bedroom 'cause I was sick of using a tablet and didn't want to deal with a laptop keyboard.

LOL At the time I would have been unable to run said wires. I returned home with 24/7 nursing staff in the home with me because I didn't want to go to a long-term care facility/nursing home. I'm too young to be in a nursing home!

It's a long, but amusing, story... There's even a song about it.

I know there are reasons for no ethernet but I was looking for why this particular instance
 
Ran into gold today while looking at the various Asus and MSI motherboards and their manuals.

(Notes. The Intel wireless drivers are included in the upstream Linux* kernel.

Even if the Linux os that my friend has installed doesn't have kernel 6.10 I can install that kernel or installed the driver.

The above link is where I went to download the Intel driver for my Linux os Devuan and it worked after the fresh installation on my Asus Tuf Gaming Intel 9560 WiFi.

So if I've learned anything in doing all this research one will need a Intel i7 CPU at the very least and a AMD Radeon 7900 XTX which is a $700.00 plus GPU!

It appears that to game on Linux (144 FPS) this could end up being a very expensive new build. This is what I think I understand.

Do I have this right?
 
Maarten @f33dm3bits is an enthusiastic Gamer -he may have some ideas in this regard, and since the thread is only on page 1 it is not a long read.

I cannot say, though, whether he may advocate a change of Distro or not, I'll leave that to him.

What's the max resolution of your monitor(s), that gpu is 4k gaming. If you don't have a 4k monitor you might as well buy a gpu that allows you to allow you to game on max settings for your monitor's max resolution. I have that gpu, it's great gpu but you might be able to save some money buying a gpu that costs less to match your monitor's resolution.

It's a LG 27 mp450-B and it's resolution is 1920x1080.

Just do a search for 1080 gaming gpu, but I would go for a 1440p gaming gpu that way you will be prepared for the future if you ever do a monitor upgrade. So I would go with one of these.

They require a minimum 700W PSU, so I would make sure your PSU is at least the minimum requirements as well, might better to then just get a 800W PSU.
