I was wondering if it was possible to install a linux operating system onto my Toshiba Satellite L505-ES5010 laptop? (it was designed to support windows 7, if that means anything)

Yes.

In short Yes, in practice, Toshiba can cause a few problems with Wi-Fi & graphics drivers but with just a little help you can overcome this, be careful of which distribution you install, some are not built for beginners and can be a right pain to install on any kit, try to select one that comes with all the available non-free drivers

It should work, I would try several Distros live first see which one's work best for you.
Mint would be a good Choice.
Let us know how you get on or if you need help.

My best mate has been running Linux Lite on his Toshiba laptop for about 2 years and it runs great!

Welcome and season’s greetings to you.

Could not find your exact model but found this..

So if you have 4GiB RAM you can use any Linux distro from Zorin to Antix.

Zorin has a reputation for having everything working straight out of the box on default settings with a very professional look. Antix is a true lightweight with WM window managers but if you need Antix with a real desktop go for Loc-OS Linux.

You will find all the help you need right here on the best Linux forum ;)
