Cant log-in to Linux OS after removing password

Im using Linux Mint 20.1
Yesterday I removed the password protection from my user account. (only intended to remove it for a few days) I then shut down the computer, then just today on the welcome screen when I click ''log in'' it just cycles. Everytime I click login it just keeps going back to the same log in screen with the LM green logo. Im not sure what happened, a bug?

I feel like I need to maybe somehow get to the terminal to maybe add a new user or something? how do I get into safe mode then into the terminal? Or does someone have different advise.

After lots of searching and not a lot of help online, I moved the flat tire to a different wheel and hoped that it went away. More specifically, I did the following:

• after a failed boot, I used CTRL+ALT+F1 to open a console
• login with my username
• use startx to launch my desktop
• open synaptic
• marked 'lightdm' for removal and applied that change
• marked 'lightdm' for install and applied that change
• did a power-off, shutdown, restart

This time, boot ran and launched the login screen. I was able to login and my desktop launched.

I have no idea what happened. I have no idea about how I should have been able to see something in the logs and journals that would explain what was going on.

Okay, so I was able to get in using startx , marked 'lightdm' for removal and applied that change - did that, next marked 'lightdm' for install and applied that change - Got error message ''could not mark all packages for insatllation or upgrade'' '' the following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all req repositories are added and enabled in the '' repositories'' option under settings''

Now that I can get in, is there a way just to re-set Linux alltogether, I dont have any saved important files or anything

As you have nothing important, just do a nice clean install - wiping everything during the installation. On a modern computer, it doesn't take more than a few minutes to do the installation itself.

When you're done with that, it's time to start thinking about backup strategies. Timeshift is popular here and searching the forum for that would be a good start.

At the moment starting Linux with the ''Startx'' command is good enough, I understand that Linux is not windows. If I get any more bugs though ill just do a clean install as you suggest.
