When setting up my virtual machine linux, I've regretted setting up my keyboard default to UK, when my keyboard is actually US based (facepalm). I thought I can change it later (which I did), but the machine is stubborn. For every new login attempt, linux will return back to the default UK keyboard setting, but that is only with the login screen. Once I gained accessed, the keyboard return back to the US setting. I'm using Virtual Box. The soft keyboard is correct, but it still use the UK setting at the login page!

It'd probably help to know which Linux you're using, including which desktop and version number.

Please see the 3rd link in my signature.
