Optical discs are put in microwave ovens, not hard-drives. Putting a hard-drive in a microwave oven would certainly destroy the hardware as well as make a great light-show of sparks.
Just in case someone reading this is thinking about putting optical discs in the microwave oven - Yes, the data is destroyed, but some poisonous gases may come off the plastic. To destroy a disc, just break it without cutting yourself. Do not get hurt trying to permanently obliterate your data.
