I have a directory named "copyDir" and its path is "home/dotKer/myFolder1/copyDir".
I can click the icon "home" on the desktop and going to "home/dotKer/myFolder1" and see the copyDir.
after I put my mouse on the "copyDir". and I do right click and copy the directory "copyDir".
and I paste it to "home/dotKer/myFolder2"

As a whole, I can copy the directory "copyDir" in "home/dotKer/myFolder1/ to the directory "home/dotKer/myFolder2/ by right click - copy - paste.

However when I try to past the directory "copyDir" to "/var/" it doesn't show "paste" on the menu.

I can do copy by the shell scripting below.

sudo cp -r /home/dotKer/myFolder1/copyDir /var/

The shell scripting above works fine.

but I hope I can do it by right click - copy - past.

Can I do it with your help?

@dotKer

/var/ is owned by Root and needs administrative privileges to copy to/from.

The reason the script works is because of the sudo.

Cheers

I am the Root and dotKer.
How can I give administrative privileges to dotKer?
OR
How can I see "myFolder" with icon as Root?

Remind us what Linux Distro and DE (desktop environment) you are using, for example Linux MInt 19.2 Cinnamon. Also if your File Manager has a Menu Bar, click Help - About and tell us what it says for example Dolphin, Nemo, Caja.

I installed Xubuntu a month ago.
The computer has Xubuntu only, no Windows.

Apache, PHP, mySQL are also installed.

I don't think I installed any file Managers.

You are, it is what you wish to move the files/folders in.

In Xubuntu, which is Ubuntu with an Xfce DE, the FM will be called Thunar.

On its menubar, click Help - About and you will see.

Using Thunar, a somewhat clumsy method might be illustrated with the screenshots below

qzTKj2m.png

SCREENSHOT 1

Open Thunar and find the folder in your Home you want to copy, mine is called multibootusb. (left window)

Open a 2nd instance of Thunar and navigate to File System /var/ (right window).

SCREENSHOT 2

...Right-click on /var/ and choose Root Thunar, and click.

A third window will open, which warns of danger to your system.

You can now go to the First window showing contents of Home, right-click and choose Copy your folder, then go to the 3rd window, right-click and Paste.

The result is shown below

SCREENSHOT 3

There may be a simpler method but this is one that springs to mind.

Thank you for your kindness with the 3 schreenshots.
I followed as you guide, and has no problem with the shot1 attached.

.Right-click on /var/ and choose Root Thunar, and click.
I do right click on /var/, and try to choose Root Thunar.
However, there is no Root Thunar on the menu with the shot2 attached.
The menu is not English so I translate it in English.

Open(O)
Open with New Tap(T)
Open with New Window(W)
Send(S)
Cut(T)
Copy(C)
Trash Can(V)
Delete(D)
Rename(R)
Making Zip file(E)
Open Terminal Here
Attribute(P)

I am afraid that I cannot go further because there is no Root Thunar.
What is the problem?
Are there any ways to copy and paste?

I understand and thankyou for the screenshots.

Happy Birthday!

Each Linux Distribution's development team, when they package an application that is shared across the spectrum, may choose to include or exclude certain features.

It is possible that Xubuntu, in using Thunar, which is the standard for the Xfce desktop environment, have modified it. Either that, or else, the Korean version is subtly different - I do not know why.

There IS another option with Thunar, and that is opening as Root from Terminal.

In the screenshot below, I have opened Terminal and then entered

Code:
sudo thunar

I have then repeated the process, another Terminal window, another Thunar launch.

Leave the 2 Terminal windows open while in session.

You can then drag and drop between the two windows.

When you are finished, close each Thunar and Exit each Terminal.

Do you know the Korean language or did you do it by using google translate?

shot1: prepared 3 window.
Top window in "home/ker/" has target directory. (I will move "target directory" to destination)
Middle window in "home/ker/test/" is the destination in home/ker/
Bottom window in "/var/ is the destination in root.

shot2: dragging the target directory from Top window to Middle window.

shot3: The target directory is arriving to Middle window.

shot4: The target directory is arrived at Middle window.

shot5: dragging the target directory from top window to bottom window.

shot6: The target directory is near to bottom window.

shot7: The target directory is arriving to bottom window.

shot8: As I put the target directory into the bottom window, it is quickly going back to the top window.

It is not stay in the bottom window, I guess, because /var/ is owned by Root and needs administrative privileges to copy to.

It is okay from "/var/" to "/home/ker/".
But it is not okay from "/home/ker" to "/var/" and from "/var/" to "/var/other directoy/"

Google Translate. Although I might have an idea on how to pronounce

saeng-il chugha haeyo

I read and write Japanese and Chinese (Beijing Dialect) but would enjoy learning Korean one day.

shot8: As I put the target directory into the bottom window, it is quickly going back to the top window.

This makes me wonder, did you do as I said and use

Code:
sudo thunar

at each of two Terminal windows? Because I do not see the warning banner (as in mine) that says

"Warning you are using the root account, that may harm your system".

The 3 countries have many things in common. And one of it is, I joke, that they dislike each other.

but would enjoy learning Korean one day.
Korean alphabet is very easy to learn because it is, I can prove it, very logical .

shot12: dragging the target directory from the top source window to the right target window.

short13: It is on the way to back to the top source window, as I put the target directory into the right window.

if I dragging the target directory to the left window "home/ker", it will be successfully moved.

I guess it is because the system recognize me as the member "ker", not the root.

The command below is the answer.
sudo thunar

Warning you are using the root account, that may harm your system".

I may should be very careful.
Thank you.

You are welcome, sir.

Enjoy your Linux

Chris

BTW I love your avatar, it makes me smile. I have adored Snoopy and Charlie Brown and his friends for about 55 years :D

When I was in the late teenage, I met Snoopy for the first time on English edition of a news paper published in my country. .
I didn't understand the articles because it is not my mother-tongue, eager to learn English at that time, So my eyes naturally went to cartoon because I expected the drawing might be understandable.
I tried to understand Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and his friends consulting with a dictionary.
Actually, I didn't understand it mostly because cultural differences and.I didn't know the sense of humor.on the cartoons.
Time of 30 years passes like an arrow after that.
I like this Avatar because Snoopy is going to study.
I feel He looks somewhat old with a glasses on his eyes as I am getting old.
I made my mind that I am going to study and find new knowledge with the sense of Snoopy's humor till dying.

BTW,
I now didn't read any English version of newspapers which is published in my country.
Instead I read English news published in English countries through internet.
I am not eager to learn English anymore, but enjoying it.

It is also same in coding.
I am not eager to learn coding, but enjoying it.
if the direction is right, it is okay that I go slowly.

I hope See you around, Sir wizard.
