Database interface

used to develop relational databases in paradox with PAL. It allows for very nice interface.
What would be the best database from open source in linux?
I don't develop in SAP or Oracle because my niche is small companies that need full relational database with small budgets. I don' t uses access because after being used to paradox it is like being trown back 20 years.
MySQL I use only for websites.
In short: when I build a nice relational database with a nice interface: what has a real future?

MariaDB would be a solid choice. I know several distros are making the move from MySQL to MariaDB due to the Oracle mess.
