the fingerprint sensor:
ID 0a5c:5834 Broadcom Corp. 5880
is not working on dell 7480
is there any way to make it working on it?

Welcome,
not good news, dell do not supply drivers for Linux, the reader in your machine[ and a couple of variants] is a well known problem
I quote
"As evidenced by numerous links, the general consensus seems to be that this device 0a5c:5834 on the Lattitude 7480 will likely never be made to function."

There is also a long-running thread on the Dell site about this reader, [pages of complaints] but Dell show no signs of helping.

thank you for your reply.

they someonesay: "The driver will have to come from the Linux distribution community", so this is wrong? the driver should come from dell?

the driver should come from dell?
If anything the driver should be provided by the manufacturer [I have already combed their web sit to no avail] Broadcom industries

@Brickwizard :-

No source code, even? We've often got 'awkward' Broadcom wireless drivers functional by obtaining the source code and firmware from their site (a couple of our members specialise in this kind of stuff).....though I've never tried looking for the fingerprint readers.

(First time I even knew Broadcom made such things. I always assumed these were Synaptic, or something similar. I guess they'd need compiling against a specific kernel, too.....that's the way it usually works under Linux.)

Mike. :confused:

Mike It
threw me too, its a combined multi-card reader [which works] and print scanner [which won't], we are use to BCM43 wi-fi and BCM Ethernet, but they make a wide range of odds and sods.

@Brickwizard :-

Yeah, I've just had a squizz through their site. They've completely re-designed the bloody thing, haven't they? It used to be easy to find source code'n'stuff for all manner of their products, but this site re-design seems as though they fully intend to deter the 'casual' browser.....they're positioning themselves specifically as an industry supplier for manufacturers.

The nearest I've been able to find for it looks like a fully-integrated SoC:-

.....unless I miss my guess. Buggers, aren't they?

Mike. :confused:

after ploughing through I dont know how many pages, I finally found this, but read it all carefully before you decide to try it.

God.. now have a splitting headache
i'm using archlinux
this is the package in AUR:
that's what they said there:
this driver package does and will not support your Fingerprint Sensor.You have 0a5c:5834 (an older model) and this driver currently supports the following Broadcom Sensors:0a5c:5842, 0a5c:5843, 0a5c:5844, 0a5c:5845
