This one had a cracked screen which I repaired, with 1 Gb Ram and Windows 7 starter it makes snails look supersonic!

It's usage will mainly be for browsing, Log keeping and maybe 'Letter typing'.... what distro would be more favourable to improve this? Obviously a Ram upgrade to 2 Gb is a must, I've tried all the usual trick, defragging and clean up etc.

Edit:
Yes, I'm considering a SSD rather than the slow 5400 RPM 'Spinner'.

Thanks, Dave.

This is a bit newer than mine, thus I will assume its got the 64 bit single core Atom1.6 there for i would recommend you look at mid or lightweight distributions [mine runs 32 bit peppermint-respin] not the fastest horse in the stable but it has been all round Europe [and beyond] with me many times over the years as a start if it is 64 bit I would try MX-linux first

Hi brickwizard, thank you for the reply. 'Ya caught me out', I forgot to mention it's a 32bit Starter not a 64bit, sorry I forgot to mention, thinking they were all 32bit on this breed.

I'm wondering if the processor will handle 64bit with 2Gb RAM limitation.

Latter ones had the Atom 64 and upgraded motherboard.....then your stuck with the diminishing number of 32 bit offerings, as I stated mine runs Peppermint -respin 32bit, it has a couple of years support life left, but the 32 bit version of MX should run ok, with this type of cheep kit its difficult to say what will and will not run, if you want to go real light weight then try Puppy linux [i could not get on with it] stick with the HD the benifit/cost of SSD to fit to my mind isn't worth it [my drive is even slower it is a 16gb [max size it will take ] ZIFF Drive]

Thanks for the info, when time permits I'll have a play it won't be just yet though. Should I have success I'll get back as it might be useful to others.

Dave

The N455 CPU is 64 bit capable.

All Atom processors implement the x86 (IA-32) instruction set; however, support for the AMD 64 instruction set was not added until the desktop Diamondville and desktop and mobile Pineview cores. The Atom N2xx and Z5xx series Atom models cannot run x86-64 code. The Centerton server processors will support the Intel 64 instruction set.

[mine is a Z5xx ]

Interesting... If I'm reading the link correctly, the one I posted, it is Pineview (or was, as Pineview has been discontinued). It is also mobile.

And is there some documentation I can read to confirm that? The Wiki links aren't actually saying anything of the sort. I'm not doubting you, I'm genuinely curious.

Having been building and repairing for friends and family I know that early atoms for netbooks and pads were 32 bit
as I said mine is a z5XX [32 bit]
the pineview core were the second of the 64 bit, range

I'm pretty sure (but can't find it in my history 'cause I've answered so many questions) that we got Linux Lite (64 bit) onto a computer with this same exact CPU. That's why I'm curious if there's any documentation. It was some time within the past 6 months, as memory serves.

I dont have time to look through everything tonight
this is the spec for the earlier model than mine

time for bed said Zebadee.. night all

Your link explains it nicely. Your CPU is 32 bit. That's exactly what your link says. The N455 is 64 bit.

I think I found some more clarification here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/ques...-n455-a-64-bit-device-4175621764/#post5807749

(That should link directly to the post I'm referring to.)

The OP in this thread can use a 64 bit distro. At the same time this CPU was being sold, Intel was still selling others, some quite similar, that are only 32 bit. But, in this case, 64 bit will be just fine.

I suspect, but can't verify, the info at Intel's Ark page is accurate within the "instruction set" field. I can't verify it 'cause I don't own enough CPUs to verify.

BUT... There's a chance that they only have a 32 bit BIOS. If that's the case, they're gonna be forced to use a 32 bit OS.

I think...

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that's right.

morning.. I was going to continue this morning along the same line, when the 64 bit processors started commercially many manufacturers were using the 64 bit CPU BUT paired with a 32 bit motherboard ,initially as there was no need in the mass market, then down the line as budget priced home and office computers , I had one myself advertised as having an AMD Athalon64-4000 so no lies there but it had a 32 bit Asrock motherboard so would only run 32bit [this was 2007] the practice of using 32 bit boards with 64 bit processors continued in some quarters untill around 2010..

Correct, as i stated in my first reply ""This is a bit newer than mine, thus I will assume its got the 64 bit single core Atom1.6""
and the OP replied..""I forgot to mention it's a 32bit Starter not a 64bit,"" so i assumed it may have the 32 bit motherboard,
but now ..me thinks it just may have had Win-32 bit installed to save on the production cost?

That happened a lot during that era. They'd ship a low-end 64 bit CPU with a 32 bit starter Windows and expect people to want to upgrade.

Well, it's not too bad - at least we're on topic.

The following still have 32 bit offerings - so there are still some choices, probably a few more as well
