Drauger OS is a gaming Ubuntu-based Operating System (OS) that has a home website of 'https://draugeros.org/'. The current version is 7.6. Strigoi.

The OS is streamlined to have less clutter of unneeded apps and concentrate more on gaming. You will not find Office apps or the like.

Download

To download the ISO file for Drauger OS, you can perform a direct download or get a torrent file to use a torrenting program for download. The main download links are at 'https://draugeros.org/download'. Here, you can also download a beta version of the next update. In the current case, version 7.7 Nzambi.

Version 7.6 is 3.8 GB in size and you extract extracted it to a USB Flash drive using Balena.

When booting from the drive, you have the option to install or try Drauger OS.

Requirements

The minimum requirements for running Drauger are:
  • Dual-core, 1.8 GHz, 64-bit processor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 32 GB Storage (about 16 GB used once installation is complete)
  • Integrated Graphics
  • 1024 x 768 at 30 Hz
  • 1 Display output
  • 3 USB 2.0 Ports
Of course, you will want to exceed these specs for a better gaming experience. The recommended hardware is:
  • Quad-core, 2 GHz, 64-bit processor
  • 6 GB DDR4 3200 MHz RAM
  • 128 GB NVMe SSD
  • Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 450, or equivalent
  • 1080p at 60 Hz
  • 1 Display output
  • 2 USB 2.0 Ports (1x for keyboard, 1x for mouse) 1 USB 3.0 Port (1x for bootable USB drive)
Again, you will want to exceed these recommendations. The main reason for the specs is for the games. The higher the specs will cause smoother game play. If a system does not meet requirements for the game itself, then the game will not run well, if at all.

Installation

Once you have made a bootable USB from the ISO file, you can boot from the USB drive and you should see a screen similar to Figure 1.

NOTE:
It is best to adjust the screen resolution before you start the install, especially if you are using VirtualBox. This makes it easier to see the whole screen and what is inside each window. Just right-click on the screen, select 'Settings' and then 'Display'.

If you are performing an installation, not just trying the OS, then in a few seconds, the installer should start, as shown in Figure 2.

If you need to manually partition the drive, then you will use GParted. The best method is to perform an automatic partitioning of the disk and use the whole disk.

The 'Quick Install Mode' allows you to change an installation JSON file for controlling aspects of the install. The file is at '/etc/system-installer/quick-install-template.json'. There is an option to select the specific JSON file you want to use.

The 'OEM Installation' option is for setting up a system that will let a user to later finish the setup. There are things that are mandatory for the 'OEM Install':
  • Uses the whole disk
  • Locale, keyboard and password are set after installation
  • Hostname and username cannot be set by the user
  • Restricted extras and updates are automatically installed
  • A Swap file is automatically generated for Hybrid Sleep
The 'Normal Installation' lets you set all settings as you go through the setup. This choice is the one I will use for this article.

NOTE: At any point during the installation, if a password is required for elevated privileges, the password is 'toor'.

Once you start the 'Normal Installation', you'll see Figure 3. Here, you can see the list of all the settings you need to set. They are all initially set to 'TO DO'. As you complete the options, they change to 'COMPLETED'.

The settings are all very basic. The only option that is mandatory, if it appears, is under 'Options'. Figure 4 shows the screen. Be sure to check the option for 'Enable Bootloader Compatibility Mode'. If you do not check the option, the OS will not boot when you finish the install and reboot.

Once you have 'COMPLETED' all the options, then you need to click on 'Done' to begin the installation. After the installation, click on 'Restart System' to restart the OS in RAM and begin the installed OS from the media drive.

Gaming

Drauger OS supports Steam, GameHub, Heroic Games Launcher (EPIC) and Lutris.

Be sure before starting Lutris, you need to install specific video drivers and then install 'meta-vulkan-drivers' for 'i386' in Synaptic'. It may be necessary to 'Fix Broken Packages' first.

NOTE: Do not perform an update, since this can sometimes cause the OS to not boot properly. I should also note that if there is a newer version of Drauger OS, you cannot simply upgrade to the next version.

Conclusion

If you want a gaming system running Linux, then this OS gives an outstanding performance. The optimizations of the OS allows for better performance for gaming without reducing security.

If needed, you can give this a try as a virtual machine before installing it on a physical system.
