Expirion has been update on 31Aug2024...

Nice reminder, i once downloaded 'Expirion-5.0.1-Xfce-240808.iso' (2 GB) and even verified it was able to boot at least in LIVE mode from my YUMi-exFAT external USB drive, then other things got me busy. Maybe this is an opportunity to verify if there's an exception to my slogan « Fix once, Break many »! Lets have some vitamin C...

P.S.: The new version 'Expirion-5.0.2-Xfce-240902.iso' was available when i revisited its project page, and this time i got curious enough to click on the "i" icon in italic. Bingo! There it was, the SHA1 control sum, so i copied my download to the USB drive and verified integrity again.

It did boot fine but the language option from GrUB's menu switched to italian, so i retried but edited the command to get my own selection, then launched the LIVE session from where to install. Partitions had been already prepared, except it was necessary to flag the ESP one correctly. The installer performed its task successfully but it felt less than user-friendly, perhaps because of its relative novelty; by the way, fonts on my small NoteBook display had to be adjusted before i could continue... There was some complain message about the i915 FirmWare but that didn't bother me again once i typed « sudo apt-get update » in the CLI, then it was ready to get upgraded. When i searched in Synaptic the video i915 firmware appeared to be present, so i started to add 'HardInfo' and got version 2.1.11, a pleasant surprise.

VLC Media Player was preinstalled and i was able to get 'Celluloid', 'Gnome Totem' and 'MPV' ready. 'Hypnotix' refused me its favours and 'SMPlayer' proved defective or at least unable to handle my .m3u iP-TV list. I'm about to examine the results collected by HardInfo using these video players, hoping this fresh-new setup has an edge.

My following thread contains previous "average values" mesured under other Linux spins:

'Dell Inspiron 15 3520 as replacement for Insignia NS-P11W7100' *
CPU N-Queens: 525.26 ±0.54 %
SysBench Memory (Multi-thread): 9977 ±0.61 % (n/a in Expirion, so far...)

Here are my « CPU N-Queens » readings as obtained while evaluating iP-TV on Expirion, once permanently installed:

Preliminary/iddle: 545.00
Gnome Totem: 851.44
Cellulolid: 885.04, 976.76 (BlueTooth earphones)
MPV: 907.64
VLC: 1022.00

Good day, have fun!!

A fresh install ain't to par with some auto-update? Well, if it auto-updates actually, as i can't remember clearly. I fire them up one after the other once in a while to check which ones grey out graciously and which ones fail early, including Win11 which proved being the worse of them all after stealing me 45 minutes when i thought 5 would do fine...

Unattended upgrades is not installed by default you can run
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
to update /upgrade or can easily install it with
sudo apt install unattended-upgrades
or get it through the Synaptic Package Manager this will allow for automatically get security update in case you cannot remember to run sudo apt update once a week
