After having used Windows for years, I finally tried Linux to avoid buying a new computer to upgrade to Windows 11. Windows 10 worked well for me with lots of support and generally getting things, hardware and software, working with few problems, never needing the disliked DOS ever again!
Investigating Linux, I was finally pointed towards Linux Mint, which after a few frustrations, I got working for me as a user, NOT a programmer. Then some upgrade to the kernel? knocked my canon scanner out which I got working again with a once off subscription.
Most of the apps on the software manager work OK, but beware if you want anything else to work!. I have now spent the whole afternoon looking to get a free project planner of any sort to use without success. My Keyboard lags behind with repeat letters like tt, oo, ss and others making you look like an idiot that cannot spell unless you fix everything up before posting. I still long for my trouble free Windows years! Windows, why did you have to stuff it up with Windows 11? Wasn't Windows 8 bad enough?
I only want to use my computer hassle free, not re-invent it! Help! Will another distro be better?

My suggestion for another Linux distribution is to try Debian 12. But since your concern is trouble free, compatibility with hardware and ease of use and you are not in to FOSS things, I also suggest to give Windows 11 a second chance, be more patient with Microsoft and try to understand that they are a business and not a charity

Could not give Windows 11 a first chance as I my laptop does not comply. So I am stuck. "It's not the best," but it is not pretty good either.

There are many guides on the internet for how to install Windows 11 on old unsupported hardware, have you try any of them?

Another approach is to stay with Win 10 even after EOL and be careful what you visit on the web, I personally don't think it makes much difference in Windows before and after EOL

as a fellow programmer I will suggest using Fedora. It is a very widely used and popular version. It works great for me programming. It is not very windows like but very solid. We have a huge mint and debian following here and they all think it is the best, but we differ in that opinion. try Fedora it will not fail to please.

I hear you, but I am only a user, not a programmer. Want my computer to work on what I need, for recreation only these days. Would love to be positive about Linux and support anyone, but cannot find the strength at the moment having once again struggled a whole afternoon in vain, and not getting anywhere.

I'm sorry I missed the "NOT". better advice.... for you go back to windows

That is ok OP. Use what you like, use to. I'm a user as well and prefer Linux for day to day tasks.....

I like Linux so much I've installed it on my 386DX25 system without any bother at all.

I also install it on all my x86 and PPC iMacs.;)

Depending on the spec's of your computer, Linux Mint may be to heavy to run on that machine.
This could explain why you are having performance issues.

What make and model number is your laptop?

Repeating Letters?....(click on menu and type in accessibility....then typing....)
  1. Open the Activities overview and start typing Accessibility.
  2. Click on Accessibility to open the panel.
  3. Select the Typing section to open it.
  4. In the Typing Assist section, switch the Repeat Keys switch to off.
Alternatively, adjust the Delay slider to control how long you have to hold a key down to begin repeating it, and adjust the Speed slider to control how quickly key presses repeat.

kernel change knocked out your scanner?

https://itsfoss.com/boot-older-kernel-default/ ......take the kernel back to the one that worked for your scannerdddddddd

Just so you know, Eric, .....Linux is a system of choices. There are a Vast number of them, related to all facets of computing.

In the majority of case a search will bring you a common sense answer....when you are not sure, there is Linux.org
Out of the 90,000 odd members here you be sure that someone will have run across the problem you are having before, and will gladly lead you in the right direction, if not just solve the problem outright.

I know it is frustrating, but generally effort in = success.

If it is going to blow your mind and cause you undue worry and frustration....then win 11 will hold your hand, no doubt. The downside is it will cost you.

Sounds like Windows 11 didn't want to comply in post #3.

Agreed, brother.....effort usually equals success.

If I had a nickel for all the frustrating times when Linux didn't perform right on my Linux boxes I'd be super rich! Most of the efforts to dig into why things were not working paid off.

Interested in finding out the spec's on that laptop.:)

Your whole post doesn't have any repeat letters...If your scanner stopped working after a new Kernel...roll back to the last working one...then wait till the next new kernel comes out...simple.

If you don't like Linux Mint...there's heaps of other Distros out there to try or go back to windoze...the choice is yours.

along with what @Condobloke has stated in post #11 you can also check

1) there is a slow key function in all Ubuntu based distros hold down the Shift Key for 8 seconds and select deactivate and see if your problem goes away

2)Your Canon printer scanner make sure cups-backend-bjnp is installed which you can get through the Synaptic Package Manager - I had to install that file to get my Canon TS-3120 to work properly

I was running Debian 11 on an old laptop that used a dual core Intel Centrino processor with 3 GB of RAM. It was pretty old and still worked, but barely. It had Windows Vista factory installed.

Help! Will another distro be better?

Maybe yes, maybe no.

Specs for your computer would be useful, it would help us to better advise on another distribution.

Also, is it Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon you are using, or if not, which?

Thanks

I doubt that it is my computer hardware. Here is the information.

Thanks, Holding the shift key down did not help, but I will check Condobloke's post. The scanner now works with Vuescan and paying once off to get things working. It used to work, but someone suggested that a kernel upgrade stuffed that up. After spending a whole day on timeshift and heaven know what, I paid to get it over with. There is no system reset easy solution like in Windows. And I get updates regularly, how am I suposed to fish out what they will do?
