Gentoo: Build the Desktop ?

Just as a random weird experiment to see how much performance I can squeeze out of this HP Mini Netbook, I made another attempt to install Gentoo from a tutorial on TechMint. http://www.tecmint.com/gentoo-linux-installation-guide/

Unfortunately, this author hasn't yet followed up with the desktop portion. So for now, I have a command line Gentoo on this Netbook built using the GenKernel option. I'm wondering if I have to further edit the Kernel to prepare it for Xorg? Do I just install Xorg, a DM, and a WM / Desktop of my choice with Emerge?

Just wondered if anyone had tips for getting the desktop. Hate to get this far and mess it up or follow unnecessary steps if the GenKernel should already have settings / modes in place.

It looks like that, I took a look through the Handbook, it contains info about minimal install, then it seems you just add necessary packages using Portage.
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:Main_Page

Also Debian has minimal netinstall and even debootstrap; using this the system will be the least bloated thing ever (https://wiki.debian.org/Debootstrap). And if you don't want systemd, Devuan developers released their debootstrap version (http://packages.devuan.org/devuan/pool/main/d/debootstrap/).

I also suggest building the kernel from git or the upstream sources, and manually compile it to prevent loading unnecessary modules.

Gonna try this. I think the GenKernel is ready for Xorg without more tweaking, but I'll find out.

emerge -pv xorg-drivers

emerge --ask --quiet xorg-server

env-update && source /etc/profile

emerge --ask x11-base/xorg-server

If this works, I'll try getting Xfce on here.

EDIT: Meh, I think this is a bust. Guess I'll throw Xubuntu on here or something. I'd go with Sabayon, but I think they abandoned 32-bit.
