Good morning ya'll.

I'm going to start my day off catching up on some threads. Kudos to the admin team for takin care of the bots. I swear it's like every night at 11pm CDT sharp the flood gates open and the bots come runnin! Woke up and it's all cleaned up, thank you!

Anyway, I was up dinking around on Debian w/ Cinnamon and notice Pigeon pinned to the start menu. I realized in that moment that I don't even recall the last time I used any kind of Instant Messaging service (barring "social" media a while back). But in the spirit of a true "IM" like IRC I haven't since the days of MSN messanger. I recall MSN Messanger you could add friends, join group chats n all that jazz. I guess I figured the age of social media sent those kind of IM messengers to the grave. Not sure why considering I know I've heard the community talk about IRC chats and things like PIgeon...pigin? Pidgeon? Bird messenger.

So for the sake of friendly conversation, might I ask how IRC works? If it in any way resembles MSN Messanger (I actually miss that lil thang hears message notification in head to this day)? I've really come to enjoy using this forum, but I also appreciate real time interaction, especially if I can help others learn in the process.

Yes, I could easily google (and likely will anyway) all of these inquiries, but I've come to respect and appreciate a lot of the conversation I get here on Linux.org so this is just my way of trying to get to know folks.

Side note, I switched from Neofetch to fastfetch yesterday, I didn't realize it had been archived so after seeing @f33dm3bits shweet setup I made inquiry. Took me a minute to theme it properly without trying to rip off his shweet setup too much lol. I'm diggin it!

P.S. Don't mind the OS Age, my PC is going through a bit of existential crisis. Contemplating setting my PC up with Proxmox and setting GPU + peripheral pass through to a primary workstation (arch) and having a couple different options readily available on my PC in addition to the rack. Idk what i'm thinking, but it's gonna happen lol

maybe a bit offtopic, but since this thread is kinda a meta thread, have a look at "gajim" https://gajim.org/
i think it's the closest to MSN Messenger available right now

I'll check it out!

Now that I think about it, I've used BeeBeep in the past for LAN chat within the household, but I wouldn't mind finding a default IM client I could use to socialize with. Thanks for the recommendation!

Basically you create an account on on the of the active irc networks and then you login with you client and you can join different channels and rooms, it's been a while so I forgot the details. Are you looking for a gui client or command-line client.

I use to used irssi, if I remember correctly I would have that running on my homeserver and I would connect that to my irc networks, then I would use a gui client to connect to my irssi running on my server. I can't remember exactly how it work since it's been a while since I used it, but I could also be confused with something else that I used it with.

At face value, it sounds like I'd need to be a full blown network genius lol! I'll look into it!

It isn't that hard, but you aren't required to use ZNC.

While @f33dm3bits already answered your question I'll add my favorite IRC client called irssi:

It's terminal based, no GUI, and in that regard out of several I've researching it's best terminal based IRC client.

Comparing IRC to modern messengers is like comparing modern days spoons to wooden spoons, while the 2 are related for purpose one is old fashioned while the other is modern variant of it.

If you look for something modern then IRC will likely not give you the pleasure of real-time chat.

Another option is to use online service such as discord or jitsi (for direct chat with someone).

I mentioned that one as well, it used to be my favorite irc client, when I was using irc that is.

I've heard the new thing for opensource chat that's like IRC is Matrix chat.

I gave up on discord. Too many purple haired crazies unable to focus on the mutual interest that is Linux. Been self hosting mattermost ever since, but I only use that to chat with family. Suppose on that note it's probably best I not worry about finding an IM community as it would be akin to throwing a bull in a chiina closet lol.

I do like the idea of CLI based chat though. I recently put KDE Plasma on my PC so to make it easier for my nieces to use it for artwork and such without me having to configure my i3 for it. Got into i3 after KDE 6 come out and was really broken on my system and I didn't wanna tinker with it. i3 got me into a lot more CLI based interactions and I grew to thoroughly enjoy it.

I suppose because people use real-time chat for fun rather than serious discussion, and it's also easy for one idiot to ruin whole discussion and sway away from the essence, and the horde will follow it.

I've given up from real time chat, used to be active on YT chat on channels that support it, however since there are no moderators all sorts of BS can be seen and report function is inefficient, you can block users but this way you only limit yourself rather than other person because 90% of people there should be blocked anyway.

I feel that in my bones. I joined so many discord servers just wanting to talk Linux. Discord that were supposedly created to discuss Linux. But they were typically so poorly managed that it was just chaos full of divisive bickering and seldom ever actually about Linux or heck even computers in general for that matter.

It's actually why I took a liking to linux.org so quickly as it was apparent that it's well managed and no nonsense (outside of general discussion anyway), it's always felt highly "Linux" focused here so I felt like I found my crowd. At least here if I put my foot in my mouth or say something stupid, most who have interacted with me know it's as simple as telling me to knock it off (I think I've only ever had a single warning here lol so that's good).

I think the whole concept behind my interest in IM is the nostalgia of it all hah!
