grub2 to grub possible or too much trouble?

I dislike grub2 immensely. I have read a procedure for replacing grub2 with grub but am wondering if it is worth the trouble. I multi-boot linux and XP. My main linux distro uses grub so therefore I am able to understand how to edit the menu.lst file. If I want to install a distro for a trial that uses grub2, can I change grub versions before the install or do I have to wait until after the installation?

A better question might be, 'how do I keep the new install that uses grub2 from re-writing the MBR and forcing me to boot from a grub2 menu'?

You can make the new Linux install to the partition and not to the MBR. Then update the older Grub to include the newer Linux. Or you can try something like Burg.

Thanks for the reminder about installing grub2 to the partition.
Yes, grub2 is that bad for me. It is confusing and you can't edit one of the files and the other is like coding in a programing language. I am near 70 and believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Grub works fine as far as I am concerned. A lot of times 'new and improved' is not better.
Enough of my rant. What do you mean by Burg?
