help regarding my RAM memory slot | single/dual channel support

Hello folks, I'm new to linux and tbh I'm really in love with it. I'll continue using it
okay now I'm coming to the problem. I have this 7 years old intel celeron machine which i have to keep using untill next one year atleast, so I have decided to upgrade it. It has 2gb ram in it. I am thinking to add a SSD and increase RAM. I want to know what would be better for me in order to make the performance bearable? A 2gb or a 4gb ram???? I have heard about dual channel and how it is needed 2 sticks of same frequencies and sizes to enable dual channel. Please look into my memory stats and tell me if it supports dual channel or not. Also suggest about the best ram size to choose for better performance.

That machine normally comes with 4Gb installed and can take a maximum of 8Gb,

You need 4 GB PC12800 DDR3 1600MHz 204 Pin Memory --- possibly 2 units.

They seem quite cheap. In the UK you can buy one unit for £8.00.

One point about using dissimilar RAM is that it will run at the speed of the lower speed unit.

So I'll have one 2gb spare ram which will nowhere be used. Also a 4GB stick in my country is around £21. Two units will make £42. That will be out of my budget.

I have just two options--

1) I add one more 2gb ram, which will make it 4gb in total and ram wont be dissimilar.

2) I add a 4GB ram which will make it 6gb in total (2+4).

Which one between the both do you consider better to go for???
 
Usually RAM in interleave mode has to be the same size.

thank you. So if I add 2gb extra to make it of the same size, it will outperform 2gb+4gb combo??

I don't know about "out-perform", but the extra RAM on the larger module won't be seen. Some BIOS's let you take the the RAM out of interleave mode. If you can't turn off interleave mode, you will need 2+2, or 4+4.
