I opened Synaptics this morning and got a message saying to run
dpkg --configure -a
I did that, and it found my USB fax modem, which is currently driverless:
Code:
Setting up dgcmodem:i386 (1.01) ...

Conexant DGC USB modem driver, version 1.01

If you need assistance or more information, please go to:

When reporting a problem for the first time, please send

us the file generated by "dgcconfig --dumpdiag".

No pre-built modules for: Ubuntu-20.04 linux-5.4.0-37-generic x86_64-SMP

Trying to automatically build the driver modules...

(this requires a C compiler and proper kernel sources to be installed)

Where is the linux source build directory that matches your running kernel?

[/lib/modules/5.4.0-37-generic/build]

What to do next? I would love to get this fax modem working.
Please note that Linuxant, the official driver source, only has packages that are over 10 years old.

And did you check out the Linuxant site? Particularly this page
https://www.linuxant.com/drivers/dgc/index.php
Been there. As I mentioned, those drivers are over 10 years old.

As far as I understand, the message I am getting means I need to compile a kernel, and based on posts I have read, it will need to be patched, too. Since I can't find anyone who has done it recently for my device, I have pretty much put this project aside.

LOL!

The driver might be 10 years old but how old is the fax/modem?

Fax machines are a thing of the past. I can't send a fax if the "recipient" doesn't have a fax machine.

I would guess that many people scan to PDF and send an email with an attachment

I picked up a cheap fax modem on AliExpress, no way to know how long it has been collecting dust in a Chinese warehouse, but there are dozens of models offered on AliExpress.

Indeed, in modern Western countries, faxing is quite out of fashion. Not in my Middle Eastern country.
It works quite well on Windows 7, and even works more or less on Windows 10, using a Windows 8 driver that comes on the CD (another obsolete technology). It ships with Windows 10 drivers, but they don't work, as well as ancient Linux drivers that don't work, either.
