Not sure what you mean by "virtual desktop." If you are running Windows, you can install VirtualBox for free, and then install Linux as a "virtual machine" inside of VirtualBox. This is a good way to get started and learn about Linux, and whether you like it or not.

If you download a Linux .iso file that you want to try and properly burn it to a USB, you can boot on it and run Linux in "live mode" without installing, or you can install it on your computer with the USB. You would also need to download a Linux .iso file to install inside VirtualBox.
