Hi,
I was struggling to get Rufus to work reliably on Windows 10. It glitched out and made the USB stick unreadable. I then put the USB in my TV and it conveniently reformatted it. It's a bit worrying that Windows 10 could not recover the USB stick.

So I thought I'd try to create a USB on my old Mac. I downloaded and verified the ISO. But I got stuck after that with some new apps starting with Etcher, it didn't want to install. And I couldn't find instructions of what to do next on my version of OSX. What is the next step?

Also what is with the bootable USB, why can't the ISO just be unpacked?

Thanks

I found this useful page: https://hackerbox.io/articles/bootable-usb-from-iso-using-osx/

Unpacking the .iso will not be effective as it will only show all of the files that make up the .iso.
The distribution has to be made bootable.

I don't recommend Unetbootin. The last 3 times I tried to use it was broken.
If Etcher doesn't work try Rufus.

See here:

On windows (via Cygwin) and Linux, I always use the dd command.
dd is installed by default on Mac too.
See this article:

Just be careful with it because if you write to the wrong device node - you WILL bork something up!!

You can use disk utility:
Just select your usb, click restore and select iso

edit: it can be burn instead of restore.
