How to get support for mpv? (Or how to enable joystick with mpv?)

Sorry for the general question, but I've been trying and failing to figure out how to use a joystick with the mpv media player a few times now, and I can't even figure out where to get support for MPV in general. According to the MPV community page there's an #mpv channel on IRC, but I haven't had any luck getting that working.

I don't imagine anyone has any leads for getting a joystick to work with MPV under Linux (Debian)? I've been happily controlling mplayer with a joystick, but mplayer has been giving me more and more problems lately, and the recommended solution always seems to be "switch to mpv". But without joystick support it's a dealbreaker for my application.

In the MPV manual is the option:

--input-gamepad=<yes|no>Enable/disable SDL2 Gamepad support. Disabled by default.

But running "mpv --input-gamepad=yes" returns this error:

Exiting... (Fatal error)

However lsusb shows the two gamepads:

Running mpv --version outputs:

Try installing gnome-mpv

Isn't gnome-mpv just a GUI for MPV? If so, I'm not using any GUI at all, so there would be no benefit, right?

But I tried gnome-mpv, and have it working with my input.conf (specified via preferences -> keybindings), confirmed working with custon keyboard shortcuts, but it's not reacting to joystick input.
