I live in a very, very rural area.

The nearest hospital is an hour and a half away. The village that's closest to me has fewer than 1,000 residents. The town I live in is technically not even a town, it's an unincorporated township - which means I have zero municipal services. There are no town police. There's no highway department. There's no local elected officials. None of those things apply to me.

There is a 'main' road that's a numbered route - a state road - that runs though the area.

I've watched them for a bit. They're running fiber.

I live off a road that's off a road that's off of the numbered route. The fiber is running down the routed road. They're plugging along and are getting closer to my house.

I have been told that I can pay the cost for them to run the fiber from the main road to my house, but I have to cover the expenses. Presumably, my neighbors will chip in a little - but my neighbors total six residences. So, it will not be cheap. I did much the same thing to get DSL until the DSL company made me angry.

I guess I can get up to gigabit fiber but I really don't need that much bandwidth.

Also, I'll still need to keep a backup connection. That there fiber is gonna get taken down a whole lot in the winter and spring. They're running it on the utility poles and not in the ground. (Considering the distance, the costs to put the lines in the ground would be quite high.) I can use my cell phone as a backup, as that's what I'm using now. It'll be just fine. I can get rid of the ugly satellite dish.

Anyhow...

There's a chance that I'll get fiber internet. I'll probably go with 500 Mb/sec... Depending on how I use it, I may later cut down to 100 Mb/sec. I really don't have high bandwidth needs. Let me stream a video while downloading an .iso and that's good enough for me.

Now, some of this is rumor... Factually, they're running fiber. Rumor has it that we'll be able to sign on. That rumor is further substantiated by the fiber company sending us an ad offering free installation. They sent it to everyone in the area. Rumor has it that others have been a mile or so away from the main line and been able to pay for connectivity.

So, some of this is still largely rumor. I am willing to pay a large sum of money for fiber. I'll cover the entire run of fiber if I have to. I'll just keep a backup connection for the times the fiber is out due to Mother Nature.

I guess you could say that I'm cautiously excited.

Go for it I have fiber internet and it's fast.

Pay for 100 Mbps Up and 100 Mbps Down.

This is the normal speed at just about any time day or night.

Download Speed
356.38 Mbps
Upload Speed
355.27 Mbps

I figure that I won't use much in the way of 'additional' bandwidth. I'll just be quicker at it. 100 Mb/sec is probably fast enough.

I would never have guessed that I'd have fiber (assuming everything is correct).

Hopefully the rumors will come to fruition for you at a reasonable price.
Hope you get fiber soon.

Had to check my spelling above because you guys do it different.
It's rumours and fibre in my case, spoken the same way though.

Regardless of that I hope you do get a fast connection.

PS
Out of curiosity, what time of day does this site show?

I believe 100 Mbps up and down is the minimum.

It's my understanding that the Government / FCC mandate that copper internet is history and fiber internet is mandatory nowadays.

I could be wrong but I don't think I am.

Thanks Chris Turner, I just get a bit confused as to when older posts are put.
I live in europe and my time now is almost 06.30

100 mbps up down....too slow.

If you are going to get it...make it worthwhile....dont cut yourself short

What do you do that makes 100 Mbps slow.
I can download GBs in seconds.
What's your internet speed.

we all know that in normal circumstances, the speeds received are generally below what is advertised....and the various companies have a list of reasons/excuses why this is so, as long as the road you live on. A great deal of it is plain bs.

The company I deal with are quite good as far as reliability is concerned. They advertise 100mb/sec and I obtain close to that most of the time.
I do not have the necessary income to take on one of their fibre plans which connect all the way to the modem....If I could I would. In an instant. No hesitation.

Some updates:

I'm told the speed is good. You get what you pay for.

I'm going to have to pay for the fiber to get to my house - but they say they'll do it. Well, they say they'll take a look and quote me a price if it's something they can do. I can't see any reason why they couldn't do it.

They advertise 500 (asynchronous for all speeds) Mb/sec as the top tier for residential but I'm sure I can be a business - and I technically am. I sell more than five cars per year so I am actually a used car dealership. They say gigabit speeds are available for businesses.

The thing is, I don't really need any of that. 100 Mb/sec should blow my mind and satisfy my needs until I kick the bucket.

Maybe I'll go for the middle option. After all, it's going to cost $8,000 to $10,000 per mile to go from the main road to my house. I might as well splurge and get a faster plan at that point. Then I can download the entire internet!

Until the DSL company made me mad, I had pretty sweet DSL. I paid a princely sum for the installation but they gave me 'business class' for the price of their cheapest plan. They even called me and had me sign up for a cheaper plan while still giving me business class. (I brought in a half dozen other customers as well.)

But, the DSL company made me mad. That was a couple of years ago. I've had to since make do with a combination of satellite and cell phone, a pretty lackluster experience. I'll check with all of my neighbors to see if they want to chip into the installation fees to get the fiber run up the road.

I'll still have to maintain a backup. Mother Nature is sure to take the fiber down. They're not running the lines underground. My cell phone should be enough for that unless it's a major outage that takes out the cell tower.

The fiber company at some stage will likely tick you off as well,.,,,,it seems to be the nature of the beasts.....they just cannot help themselves. All talk, and in the long run, the story alters/changes/cops a twist that was not present initially...

I am not trusting of anyone associated with the telco business.

I am also as cynical as all hell.

In writing, or it does not happen

I don't have any special internet package just plain old basic fiber internet cost around $50.00 per month.

The voip telephone cost around $60.00 per month and if it were up to me I'd ax the voip telephone but the Wife wants it end of story.

I don't have no complaints as ya gotta have internet nowadays or you just can't get nothing done everything is done online.

I have to protect myself. I get everything in writing. I have a lawyer on retainer who also happens to be a close personal friend. Like, he was the driver of the vehicle when I got all smashed up, broke my femur, broke some ribs, etc... (It's a long story.)

From what I see, VOIP is ~$25.00 per month and you can transfer your existing number at no additional costs. But, the entirety of paperwork I have at this point is a single piece of paper with information printed on it about costs and whatnot.

I did call the company today to talk about it. That discussion was about getting fiber to my home from the routed highway. It's going to be a bit expensive but it's worth it to me. Well, it should be worth it to me. I'm hoping it's worth it to me.

Speed is quite comfortable here in a rural township setting, about 200 kilometres from a state capital city:
Code:
speedtest-cli
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from Telstra Internet (10x.17x.20x.24x)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by Encoo (Sydney) [1.60 km]: 26.68 ms
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 258.14 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed......................................................................................................
Upload: 16.57 Mbit/s

One pays for it: $AU130.00 a month! It serves a number of machines and users here.

On the back-up issue, the router/modem provided by the ISP here has a sim in it so that when the fibre link is down, it switches to wifi. There's a light on the router/modem box which lights up when access is by wifi. When measuring download speed whilst running on each, there's no noticeable difference between fibre and wifi speeds.

The current plan here has unlimited download which made a huge difference for people here compared to the limits imposed by the plans on the copper network.

and that is it in a nutshell.....unlimited rocks

It will be worth it to you, David. In spades. Knowing that when you turn pc/s on, it/they are goping to perform.

You have gone long enough tying the pieces of string together to make things work.

You will have the certain knowledge that things will just work.

I am optimistic!
