I recently installed LInux on my Dell Latitude D610 dual booting Windows 11. I've got 1GB RAM and 40GB storage.

I was able to log in but now my screen is black and my mouse is super jittery. I'm new to Linux so I don't know what to do, please help!

I've done absolutely no googling to try and resolve this issue, but I hear all the time that LInux gives new life to old hardware but Windows ran just fine!

WHY WONT ANYBODY HELP ME!?

Hello? My screen is still black. I rebooted the laptop by submurging it into the toilet but now it wont boot.

WHY WONT ANYBODY HELP ME!?

I soaked it in rice and it's booting again, phew; I thought Linux broke my computer!

Linux sucks, I can't believe anybody uses this trash. I'm going back to windows.

Are you drunk? did you forget you're Arch user? you should teach us rather than us teaching you how to fix it lol

Please hold. I'm currently in the process of reposting my issue in a different thread. Maybe I'll have better luck if I post the exact same issue but in a different spot???

Now this is just silly and I think it's time to insult your intelligence because you didn't tell me EXACTLY how to resolve my issue. @CaffeineAddict HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT!

I've just posted to LTT.com because I have no doubt their linux subsection would be more helpful than Linux.org. YOUR SO UNHELPFUL!

I finally googled the issue and this reddit post suggests sticking my laptop into the microwave for 30 seconds to resolve my issue. Something to do with the molecular supatonic hyprconsolidator being incompatible with my current BIOS version and fast boot.

OK! I THINK I'M MAKING PROGRESS!

Reddit says I need to execute

Code:
sudo passwd root

and set to "password". They also asked me for my Public IP address and IPv4. See, I knew Reddit was going to be more helpful! They've even offered direct support.

I have an issue with that you have an issue.

I have an issue with that you have an issue.

Lest not my issues intervene with your issues. Please submit your own vaguely detailed topic that elaborates only on the irrelevant details of your issue.

Then consider posting in a few other threads, consulting LTT and reddit as I've found them to be more helpful.

SITREP: Since giving them the password (password) to some user called "root"; my bank has called me and notified me that my savings account has been drained and they're wondering if there was fraudulent activities or if I really wanted to "close out" my account. It's probably coincidence, no I'm sure it is because Redit would never steer me wrong.

I think Linux has SECURITY ISSUES! It doesn't even have an anti-virus!

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Don't worry! I'm here to help!

I've moved your thread to the off-topic sub-forum. I almost moved it to the 'forum assistance' sub-forum for my own amusement but I decided that was entirely too meta and my lowbrow humor might not be appreciated.

As my role is that of being a janitor, doing that would be like dumping a pile of trash in the middle of the floor and then lighting it on fire. Well, maybe not quite that bad.

Also, there are people who have not only not power-cycled their device but there are people who don't even have the device plugged in to a mains outlet.

AND...

I have a story!

A long time ago, I owned a business. We hired all sorts of technically minded people, but not all roles required technical competence. It was someone in one of those roles who had 'upgraded' her computer to add another HDD. She complained profusely that it did not work and was quite adamant that she'd put the HDD in her computer properly.

One of our IT staff agreed to have a look at it. So, she brought it in for them to look at.

She had indeed put the HDD in her computer. It just wasn't hooked up to anything. It was sitting sideways on the bottom of the case with nary a cable hooked to it.

She was darned good in her official role within the company but knew next to nothing about how her computer worked. This was in the mid to late 1990s, to give some perspective.

Moral of the story is that not everyone is an expert.

Many people aren't even able to answer some of the more basic questions about their computers. They have domain expertise and computers aren't in that domain. I've often asserted that asking a good support question isn't an easy task. (It's easier for us because we're used to it.) They'll even present the issue as though they know what they mean but the issue is something else entirely.

There's a reason why they ask you if you plugged the device in and, if it's plugged into a power strip, if the power strip is itself turned on. They ask those questions because they've experienced those very things so often that they've added it to their standard list of questions when diagnosing the issue.

That warmed my heart while simultaneously breaking it at the same time.

Does not compute. Calling customer support to see if my feelers be defective :D

There's your problem right there.

May help to donate some of this to Linux when you downloaded your iso.

Sir, I'm of the mind to ask for help without providing any relevant information; do you really think my pockets be deep enough to contribute anything to projects!? How dare you be so bold as to ask me to appreciate the hard labor of those who contribute for nothing! PFFT.

Don't you know, the world revolves around meeeeeeeeee!

WHY WONT ANYONE HELP ME!

I gave up. I installed Windows Vista.

RTFM - Retry Trying Factory Modifications?

Does not compute.

Ok i'm done now lol. I've had my laughs and I appreciate the veterans sportsmanship of ya'll in this lil jab.

I get that new users don't always know that in order to use their device they must first power it on. But if it wasn't clear already, the point I wanted to make is that we're GLAD to help people, so long as they're willing to do LEGITIMATE homework on their own. Not just some simple google search and they latch onto the first headline that catches their fancy; then pop into forums like this acting all arrogant and cocky or even quite entitled.

It's hard to fill an empty glass that thinks it's full and I figured I'd try to share a laugh with others like myself who get kind of tired of trying to help the helpless.

Cheers boys, thanks for the good times.

What even worse is combination with help vampirism.
A help vampire that knows nothing better than "it doesn't work" and "why nobody helps", very annoying combo.
