I'm a web developer of 20 years and I just installed Ubuntu desktop the other day, so far I freaking love it! It's like a sixth of the size, runs lightning fast, and open-source! Keep up the good work! It truly has proven itself to be everything it is touted to be, I've manually installed a LAMP setup and everything on it, have it all up and running, and there were NO bumps/hiccups along the way. Awesome stuff!

would be nice for you to mention "your approach" to get around the common issue of working as a "normal" user but for instance apache in httpd usually has something like ownership apache:apache or as on my arch http:http

Actually i think apache fires up via root but there is a hand over; the point being if you don't address the issue of permissions . you will not be able to directly edit code of a dev web site in eg /srv/http as a normal user. Working as root isn't a good idea either. I wrote up some approaches on slackware docs for this and similar on my current Arch setup. Just wondered your approach

ps happy international programmers day 256 bytes into the year
