please this is the problem i'm haven with my chromebook
ereskeie7@penguin:~$ shell
-bash: shell: command not found
ereskeie7@penguin:~$

Code:
Ctrl-Alt-F2
will shell you out
Code:
Ctrl-Alt-F7
will take you back to the GUI
(or it should, unless Chromebook is weird and/or corrupted)

What exactly are you trying to do?

Shell? Why do you want to access the "Shell"?

On a Chromebook you can get to the "Terminal" by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T

I am quite new to Linux/Gnu myself. However, I have had my fair share of installing Ubuntu. My question for you is are you new to Linux? why would you run the command shell? Also, do you even know what developer mode is used for?

You can download Ubuntu from ubuntu.com, download the iso image, copy the image using Chromebook Recovery Utility. From there you may want to duckduckgo or google on how to enable usb booting.
