Imaginary case ... You wake up on Sunday morning and turn on the news; Headlines read "MS, as a company, no longer exists." MS clients (home and corporate) are left without MS support. What does the future of computing look like?

The future itself would look pretty grim. Thousands of companies, institutions and facilities, including hospitals and fire stations, would be unsupported and unpatched. Ramsonware would infect everything in a few months. Millions of people wouldn't be able to do their job and the civilization would collapse.

Not to mention all the companies' back-ends running on Azure infrastructure. Banks, government departments, energy companies,...

Paraphrasing the banking industry, Microsoft is "systemically important" (as well as Google and Amazon, amongst others are).

It means all windwoes users would have to learn Linux but how can they because it's too hard.

It would mean Macs take over the desktop and Linux moves to #2.

Very True....That is the reality.

The fall out for all of society would be tantamount to a pandemic 5 or 6 times worse than covid 19. Possibly even greater than that. Catastrophic comes to mind.

As much as we love to 'bash' M'soft, they do have a good side....and extremely good side.

In Australia we allude to the bashing of m'Soft as "Tall Poppy Syndrome"....
There is a tendency for some to criticise those who stand out. This phenomenon is called the ‘tall poppy syndrome’ – a trend which cultural observers believe is killing employee morale.

The point of cutting down a tall poppy – in the original Australian context – is to keep the flowers’ height uniform. Over time the Aussie slang has come to mean ‘cutting down’ high achievers who stand out in a field of mediocre performers.

If only they weren't so bloody criminal in their attitude to your and my data !

What a shame they are not like the soft little cuddle balls that is Linux !

Only if Mac's became affordable for the average person, the average person isn't able to afford the high pricing of Apple products.
