In what case we use a bridge in networks?

I remember that we use a bridge to connect networks with different topology, for example a token ring network with a star Ethernet network. However Google disagree with that and I consider the possibility to be wrong

From memory [networking was/is not my thing] one of the companies I worked for used a network bridge to link several LANs together to make a larger network mass... but this is from memory and I may be wrong
