It did reboot.

I've deleted these, the only files that have any xorg.conf in the file names. Hope it reboots.

I have a copy on the external drive, if it doesn't work I can go load the live CD and move the deleted files back.

xorg.conf.backup
xorg.conf.dist-upgrade - 201403062019
xorg.conf.dist-upgrade - 201403070206
xorg.conf.nvidia-xconfig-original

Not sure why the command didn't work? After it didn't work I did a copy past and still no go.

Yes it would have rebooted ok - the presence, or not, of xorg.conf does not hinder the system rebooting.

If you examine the filtered log you have posted twice now it contains this:
Code:
[ 45.135] (EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)

Have a look in these locations

/usr/share/X11
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

Do not delete any files, just post an ls of each directory. Also you will need to post up or attach the full /var/log/Xorg.0.log and a full dmesg (use code tags!)

Not sure how to ls the directories that are needed.

A full dmesg is 14 pages long. Do I need to filter it? I don't want to bloat the forum with things that are not required.

Sorry for the bit of ignorance.

That /var/log/xorg.conf.d is very very long.

Also you will need to post up or attach the full /var/log/Xorg.0.log and a full dmesg

If you use code tags around your commands, code, terminal output, log files, etc, you won't "bloat the forum". I wouldn't worry about bloating the forum anyway...

Code:
[ 47.992] (==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"

Lets see what's in there
Code:
$ cd /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
$ ls -l

dmesg might not be that important, but then again who knows, I would pipe it to a plain text file and upload it to the board (or something like pastebin) as an attachment:

Code:
$ dmesg > ~/dmesg.txt
This will create a text file called dmesg.txt in your home directory, just upload that.

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d$ ls -l

Well I'm stumped as to where that "nvidia" config line is coming from...

Do you have a /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf file? (not the .d directory but a file?)

Can you run these two commands and post the outputs
Code:
$ grep nvidia /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*conf
Code:
$ grep nvidia /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/*conf

I can't see any obvious problems in dmesg

It's likely that even if we can eliminate the attempted loading of the nvidia module, that you still won't get 3D hardware acceleration from that GPU. There is no real gallium support for Geforce 4 MX which your GPU is based on (they are notoriously bad in fact - and the 4 MX series were actually Geforce 2 generation rather than true Geforce 4).
Code:
[ 49.876] (II) NOUVEAU(0): [DRI2] DRI driver: nouveau_vieux
[ 49.876] (II) NOUVEAU(0): [DRI2] VDPAU driver: nouveau_vieux
nouveau_vieux is the classic mesa/drm driver for the old GPUs. It may not be well supported/developed upstream.

It may be just one of those things.

As I said in an earlier post, you could revert to a distro which runs xserver 1.12 - e.g. 'buntu 12.04 - and then install the relevant nvidia proprietary legacy driver. A few other distros which would support this would be Centos 6, Debian 7 and earlier Slackwares (around about 13.x and older).

There is no xorg.conf file.

This laptop is old, how old I can't remember when I bought it. The desktop is another matter, I built that in May 2013. So the old laptop is just an experimental little box to mess around with Linux. It is probably as good as it will get and I am satisfied with that. The help you gave the other day did (at least) allow noveau to load past the left over Nvidia stuff.

Because I am satisfied with the set-up, I don't think I'll go to an older distro.

Thanks for your help.

The next thing is to attempt to get the Broadcom driver installed without messing up the system. I tried it with Ubuntu installed and it did not go well. The crash was what led me to decide to just go Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu with KDE installed. I really wasn't thrilled with the look of Unity. It ran ok I just wasn't a fan of the look of it.

I could make another partition on this laptop and try some of those older distros. Maybe....just maybe.

Before you take the hasty step of messing with the wl driver (broadcom-sta), which may not even support your device, have another look at your dmesg:
Code:
[   23.088259] b43-phy0: Broadcom 4306 WLAN found (core revision 5)
[   23.112013] b43-phy0: Found PHY: Analog 2, Type 2 (G), Revision 2
[   23.136168] Broadcom 43xx driver loaded [ Features: PNL ]
Code:
[   23.898108] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found
[   23.898115] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode5.fw" not found
[ 23.898119] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all instructions on this website.

This should be enough to get the missing firmware installed:
Code:
# apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
(in the multiverse repository)

Unloading and loading b43 should be enough to get a working connection
Code:
# modprobe -r b43 ssb ; modprobe b43
(pretty sure I posted something like this in this forum recently)

Just in case the Wifi install goes awry, is there a way to backup my system? Kind of like Restore in Windows?

Follow the steps in by previous post will install about two packages, none of which would damage your system.

Firmware will be extracted and installed in /lib/firmware

The driver is already installed - it's part of the kernel.

It is done. I'm on WiFi right now. :)
