Installing On Second Internal Hardrive?

Almost there….Here is what I have: Dell Dimension 8100

One 120 gig hardrive

(partitioned to a “C” drive and a “D” drive, windows XP

is on “C” and Ubuntu 12.04 is on”D” drive to dual boot)

One 120 Gig hardrive labeled “E” drive

What I tried to do is install Linux Mint 13 onto the second drive “E” so that I could boot to either Windows XP, Ubuntu 12.04, or Mint 13.

During the install with Mint I partitioned the “E” Drive into 4 partions…20gig –went to /root, 86gig went to /home, 10 gig went to /windows as a shared file and 4gig went to swap (double my ram)

My intention is to eventually dump windows and use only Mint or Ubuntu, when I can get linux to work with my scanner (it is currently unsupported)

I now can still dual boot to XP or Ubuntu but there is no option to boot the “E” drive with MINT.

Bios won’t give me any options other than boot from cd rom, hardrive, or floppy. I understand that windows 7 gives more options. I thought if I download a boot manager it would get me those options. I downloaded Boot-Us and when I was about to install to disk it showed that there was no bootable drive on the “E” drive. Tried to get a screen shot of it but the prt screen stopped working on Xp (still works in Ubuntu) so below is a text report of what Boot-Us found:

I think I installed correctly as I can see the root, home and shared fat32 file in Ubuntu. Can’t see the swap file though. And I think Boot-Us see’s it too.

My question is, should I install Boot-us to the Hardrive and will I accomplish what I am after or will I screw up my system. Is there a simply way to be able to boot up “E” drive into Mint. Boot-Us looks pretty scary and I don’t feel I know enough . Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for all the details. Thanks in Advance!

When running Ubuntu:
Edit /etc/default/grub and make sure these lines are commented out (#)
Code:
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
then update grub:
Code:
sudo update-grub2
Hopefully grub-mkconfig will find Mint on the second drive and add an entry for it in the Ubuntu grub menu.

There is a possibility that the computer cannot boot from the second HDD.

Do I type :Sudo Edit /etc/default/grub into the terminal, and then the lines:
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true

I have not used the terminal yet.
Thanks, John P

No.

UNIX file systems are case sensitive, so Sudo is not sudo.

Try the nano editor (it's simple).

Code:
# nano /etc/default/grub
(prefix that with sudo, if you're using sudo)

If you don't run the update-grub (or update-grub2) script the changes to the config won't take effect.

If you still can't work out the nano editor
Code:
$ man nano

Here is what I did:

and here is what my folders look like:

I will try and restart and see what happens....this is all done in Ubuntu, that is why I was able to get the screenshots...

Should be:
Code:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub

I noticed Mint is added to Ubuntu's grub menu. Since Ubuntu normally hides the menu, you cannot select Mint during boot. That is why you need to comment out those lines.

if you have gtksu installed, you can also try this:
Code:
gtksu gedit /etc/default/grub

The first try worked!!! When Computer boots up it goes into the boot menu to choose Windows or Ubuntu. I chose Ubuntu and then on the Ubuntu boot screen it showed Mint and Mint safe boot ups. I chose Mint and it worked. I am typing this from the Mint OS. So If I am to understand this I always have to boot through ubuntu boot screen? I can never boot up directly from my second drive? Can I eventually delete xp and ubuntu and only have Mint on the second drive?
I still have a long way to go learning Linux and Terminal prompts. Still not sure what you mean by comment out those lines...

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
Seems like there is also an issue with the updates...they don't want to install even though they were found. Is it something I did?

If this system works, I would stick with it. Eventually you can remove XP just fine.
To comment out those lines, make sure # is in front of each line.
