Hi, in next few days I plan on having a computer shop where I bought my laptop from late last year, to do a dual boot of Ubuntu alongside the preexisting Win11 Home OS.
My laptop is ASUS Vivobook Go with 16Gb RAM and 1Tb SSD.
Shop has already confirmed that the installation can be done.
I read somewhere, not sure where now, that there is a version of Ubuntu with a bucket-load of software on one version of Ubuntu but on another version there is much less extra software. Does anyone on here know to which version has more software than the other one?
At some point I plan on deciding whether to keep Win11 at all after trialing Ubuntu with idea to remove Windows altogether and just have Ubuntu.
Cheers,

The Ubuntu family all draw from the same repository [aka app store] the main differences are the apps that are pre-installed in each different build and often different desktop, ordinary Ubuntu has the most features, probably more than you need,
don't get put off by people saying this distribution is best or that one is best in most cases its only the bells and whistles that are diff rent.

TRY before you buy
get yourself a decent quality USB pen-drive, download say 6 different distributions, and run them in live test mode, to see which you like the best, you will not get the full speed but you will see if you like the look and feel of each, If you go down this path, I suggest you try Ubuntu,Lubuntu,Mint LMDE, Parrot home, Linux Lite, and MX-linux

G'day, again, Enoch.

Ubuntu actually have a number of "flavours" - you can read about them here

https://ubuntu.com/desktop/flavours

We have, here, two members who are also part of the Ubuntu/Lubuntu team, being
  • Chris Guiver @guiverc , an Aussie, and
  • David G. @KGIII , an American
They may be best placed to advise. By my mentioning them with the @ they will be notified.

Cheers.

Hi Brickwizard,
I forgot to mention I have Virtual Box installed on my Win11 laptop and having a look at different Ubuntu versions. I'll look at downloading the versions you listed.

Not a problem, you are entering the world of Linux, it's like entering an old fashion sweet shop, full of lots of different jars with their labels, and sweets of different flavour, it can be hard to find a favorite

Hi, so far it is a toss up between Lubuntu and Parrot using Virtual Box. Cannot download MX Linux though. Any other distro's out there based upon Ubuntu? Even within VB I found Lubuntu to be very quick compared to all the others I tried.
Thanks. I still have the iso files within VB. Cheers, Enoch111

Cannot download MX Linux though.
try https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-linux/files/Final/Xfce/MX-23.5_ahs_x64.iso/download
based upon Ubuntu
the ones I have listed [apart from Ubuntu and Lubuntu] are Debian based [which is the base used by Ubuntu]
there are around 500 different desktop distributions
some other Ubuntu based are LXLE, Xubuntu, Elementary, Zorin, and one I dont recommend as its made specifically for system 76 equipment and can be a right pain in the rear to install.is POP.

Its brekki time here so popping off for an hour or so, if you give me some time i will post the links later [about 22-30 hrs island time]

That's a fine choice to start with (or even finish with). It'll be very familiar looking and things are where they logically would be.

It's easy to install software and packages that aren't in the repository are very often released as .deb files - which are generally easy to install.

Hi Brickwizard,
I will try the free version of Zorin OS before buying it with Pro version. I have several 16Gb Adata memory sticks floating around. Is Zorin a popular OS? Just been to their site and it does look good. If I choose it over the others I have looked at I'll get it installed by someone more proficient at installations.

I am of the No one distribution is the best brigade, If I thought it may cause erroneous problems I would not Suggest it, choosing a distribution is akin to buying a vehicle, they all have a driving force the thing that make you chose are the bells and whistles and the colourN'chrome, With Linux they all have the same driving force [the Linux kernel] the distribution is the shape with the selected apps [bells and whistles] and your desktop is the paintN'chrome.
As I said in one of my fixed posts,
The one that is right for you is the one you like the look and feel of, and lets you perform your daily tasks, only you can choose

is it popular Is difficult to say, there is a lot of anti towards distributions that are commercialy produced from what is essentially a free system, the only benefit would be limited developer support in addition to places like this one.

I decided I do not need Zorin OS and currently downloading Budgie LTS via uTorrent.
Reason being it is loaded with professional software I most likely will not use.
How do I use Checksum thingy?
Cheers,

I've boiled it down as to which Linux I think I would like...
A Ubuntu distro most similar to Win11 Home but without being buggy, lots of available software, not so much professional items as in Zorin, but with a very similar interface as to Win11.
I had a chat with a friend today who's partner is also planning on using Linux and she said to wait a bit before I get a version installed.
Cheers,
