Hello! I'm running Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon on my HP laptop, and I've run into an issue that I've looked up, with no answers that I could really understand. I usually use my university's WiFi while on campus, because it's free and it works, but after moving to Linux (from Windows), the network now asks me for a CA Certificate whenever I try to use it. I don't really do tech stuff, so I must ask; what's a CA Certificate, and how do I get one? How are they used? Will I have to get a special one for my school's internet, or can I use just anything? I'm sure these are a lot of questions with super complicated answers, so I'm okay with looking for the terms if I don't understand them. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have a read through this.
It would appear that your best chance of success may be the Universities IT department or similar

you could try

I will mention another members name, when he sees this he may be able to help.....update:...I note he has just posted ^^^^^.....i will mention another name, just in case you still need help

@dos2unix

No action needed from you

Generally, it's in your repos. I don't have a Mint system in front of me right now, not at home.

apt install ca-certificates.

That's a guess, but it should be close.

Didn't work. I think I might have to find the certificate for my uni itself. I've emailed the IT Department, so here's to the hope that they know what they're doing better than I do.

Following @dos2unix's "it's in your repos.....and I note your comment directly above this.////

Just checking......Open Software Manager....type in ca-certificates......I also run Linux Mint 22.1......a screenshot of mine looks like the below

The three green ticks indicate that all 3 are installed.

I guess the problem here is... how do you install packages from the internet, if you can't connect to the internet?

hm. I'll do that now. I'm not sure exactly which my uni would use, though.....

I have the ca-certificates one, and python3-certificates. Nothing else, it looks like.

I can install them just fine since I'm not at my uni right now, but if I want to do online stuff (without sapping my cellular data from my phone for a hotspot) then I'll need to figure out which certificate they use...

Details, details...lol

Good thing someone is thinking clearly !

Install all 3 that were in my screenshot. They were installed automatically on mine....I had no input there.

Doing that will do no harm

Installed them. I hope the IT staff contact me quickly, because the weekend's coming up and they'll be closed (and I'll be too far away from my uni to use the network) so I hope they can get it done asap

Update: I won't be able to test it until the week after next, but the IT Department did respond. The guy I talked to said to use system certificates, and if that doesn't work, to see if connecting without it would fix it. I'll figure it out, lol

Alright, back at my uni with enough time on my hands to use the internet. What commands do I use?
