Interprocess Communication - methods to find Latency & Throughput

I am trying to evaluate different Interprocess communication mechanisms - Shared memory, Named pipes and UNIX Domain sockets. I wanted to measure the latency and throughput for each of the above mentioned IPC mechanisms. I am new to IPC and Linux. Could you anyone suggest me a method or way to solve this. Are there any tools that can be used to measure this?

Homework? Assignment? Paid job?
