Hello,

I am currently trying to install Linux on a ssd for my pc with an x570 motherboard. I am running into issues when installing Ubuntu 24.04, which I believe is: illegal qc_active transition 008000000 -> ffffffff or something similar. (EDIT: The ssd is now completely formatted).

The pc has two windows drives that I unplug the Data and Power cables from when I am running Linux. I also swap one of the sets of SATA cables onto (unsure if that is causing any issues) the linux SSD when I am booting off of it.

Any advice? If I wanted to could I just format the ssd that currently has a partial linux install on it and try to dual boot of off the system if that would fix anything.

Thanks for any help.

Again general description of sys: x570 Motherboard, Ryzen 5 3600, RX 580, 16 gb ram, 1 SSD + 1 HDD (running windows), 1 SSD (trying to install Linux seperately from the system).

G'day Ape23, Welcome to Linux.org

before you installed Ubuntu onto the SSD.....did you Disable Secure Boot in bios?

while you are in there, disable fast boot as well

@Ape23, can I ask you......did you follow any tutorial or youtube vid etc etc to learn about installing Ubuntu ?.....or from a forum somewhere etc etc ?

Your concept is good keeping things separated on different drives but you are doing it the hard way.
check this article

as for why it won't go on the drive, wipe the drive. no partition or anything and let linux install do that for you. Otherwise I would look at perhaps a different ssd drive. Many of these drives from fly by night manufacturers have issues. I use only Samsung, Seagate, Western Digital, and Kingston. They stand behind the drives and while they may be a few dollars more, they are worth it because they do not fail as easy and the quality of materials is better. Might want to certify the problem drive using SMART.
