It's time for a poll. How long have you used Linux?

The funny thing is that you posted it on April 1st. Was it supposed to be a prank in some way?

No, it was just an unscientific poll to amuse us and give us something to talk about. It did both of those things. Using the data for anything important would have been foolish.

There was a poll attached to this. After a couple of years (somewhere around that long) the forum software decided to remove the poll. This makes the thread look a bit wonky to those who don't know this.

What I should probably do is just start a new thread with a new poll and then redirect my signature to reflect that there's a new poll available. But, if I do so, it will likely only last for as long as this one did.

I don't know why the forum ate my poll. I presume that the software just decided that the poll is old enough and no longer wants to store and present that data. So, it tosses it all into the bitbucket and makes the thread look rather silly.

But, there are some great conversations and comments throughout the thread - if you're bored enough to read them all.

It certainly did. Now this post has 20 pages. Yep. When I first came across it, I was searching for the poll, until I read that you'll stick with it for a few days. I read a few comments in the thread, I couldn't really understand because it's mainly about old tech and how they started tinkering with Linux. Pretty useful and might bring memories to someone else but couldn't really understand a few terms. (I'm 13) Maybe you could make a new poll and put it on the website if you can control it. That'll bring more attention quickly.

Thanks

I'll likely lock this thread and create a new poll at some point.

I had to just establish some arbitrary numbers.

Just pick the category to which you belong.

For fun, I've made it so that you can't see the poll results unless you have also voted.

Also for fun, you can not change your vote.

(I may sticky this for a few days. I want to give folks a chance to respond.)

If you need to add a caveat, do so in the thread. Note that this is in "General Linux" and not "Off-Topic", so please try to keep it on topic.
I am a total newbie and my son told me to use Linux on my home server that I am building.....therfore I am here!

Welcome aboard. Feel free to make an intro post in the Member Introductions section of the site.

I have been using it on and off for a few years now, am currently building a distribution based on Debian GNU/linux for a project that i am a part of

I really should close this and start a new one, because the poll that was attached to the thread has expired.

I've since learned that there's a chance to keep the poll from expiring. I'd just have to remember to revisit the poll on a regular basis to extend the expiration date and that should keep the poll from expiring.

That's if the 'net was correct. This has not been tried by me and I'm not sure if regular users can do that. We also don't know how long a poll lasts before expiring when the default settings are used. That'd need to be a long-term experiment.

Maybe I'll get motivated and take care of that over the coming weekend, or sooner? I'll try to think of it but I need to head out soon to see my lawyer. (It's nothing bad and nothing criminal in nature.)

How long??? Seems like forever. 8^)

Around 2012. That's when I started working on the company's global phone system. There was a small smattering of attempts before me, so I at least had somewhere to build from.
It took about a year, but I got it done (in between it and my actual job). The system pretty much takes care of itself.
Having returned to boredom I retired ;^). I kinda miss puttering around with the code, it was actually fun and challenging.

By then, you should have (at least I hope so) been doing VoIP PBX. I started out with TDM PDX and later would move to VoIP (in my offices). In the former, we contracted that out but still had to do things like move seats and numbers around. With the latter, that is VoIP, we had someone on-staff that was trained-up to deal with it.

The control panels were universally horrible and there were so many cryptic names and settings. It was easier with VoIP but it was still quite a bit of work and technical knowledge. That said, if you knew what you were doing (and I did not), you could make the PBX perform quite nicely and there were great features.

One of my favorite features (we only had about 235 seats across three locations, all on the US eastern seaboard) was the ability to get voice messages in .wav format in my email. The VoIP setup included voice recognition ("Call Bob Harvey.") but it was pretty horrible. I assume that it has improved a great deal since then, as voice recognition has improved a great deal since then.

I really should close this and start a new one,

I've closed it for you in the meantime, David - remember to take your shark repellent with you for the lawyer.
