It's time for a poll. How long have you used Linux?

Probably add levels of usage to the poll.

User - GUI interface, browse, chat, email, office, pr0n

Admin - Rarely sees the GUI except to bring up another terminal window to log into remote system.

Scripter - does basic scripting for the admins and is probably an admin themself.

Programmer - Usually knows more than one language, gets annoyed by all the above when asked to write something.

And then the dude that compiles everything from scratch, spends most of his time just compiling new kernels and programs and rarely actually uses them for anything more than compiling another one.

Ha, i never heard anything Terminal pre-Linux, i am so new you can smell the paint drying, but i am keen and Linux only motivated.

I just intro'd myself and ranted about how much I hate Apple now and trying to ditch it. Would be interested to hear your Apple hate story.

Another Aussie here. Linux since 1998. Slackware, Red Hat, Fedora, now Debian. The appeal for me was the open source aspect, the collaboration and sharing which scientific and academic people routinely engage in. I'm reminded of a time some years ago when someone in management at the Australian scientific research organisation, CSIRO, was proposing to re-equip the computer technology of the organisation with a proprietary alternative. It produced such an enormous backlash because the so many of the research staff had so much invested in the specialised programs they had written to do their work in linux. The proposal foundered.

Only 10 votes so far. It's not quite the distribution I was expecting, but it's early yet.

Because Linux has been widely available since the beginning of 1992, I would think lumping 15+ into one column would badly skew the results.

Oh, it's hardly scientific and I had to draw the line somewhere. I was more interested in the earlier years of usage than the older, so you get what you get. Even had they been broken into something like 5 year increments, it'd not have changed the results much. The results should be considered nothing but a curio. Given the age the poll, many of those in the shorter categories would have even moved up the list a bit.

Wasn't sure how to answer this one. I believe it was 2002 or '03 with Fedora Core 1 I believe it was. Maybe FC2. Only messed with it a couple months. Couple years latter I picked up Red Hat from Staples. That only lasted a months. I really didn't become an everyday user of Linux until 2012.

Indeed, I've been at it for a long time now. I have the chance to see a Windows machine now and again - but I can't even remember some of the basics. The last Windows I used was Vista, so it's pretty foreign to me today.

I've never used SUSE, but I have used OpenSUSE and it's a pretty solid distro. I have a Tumbleweed VM that I use for learning, testing, and article writing.

yes then i had i first try, find out all the parts in the 486 Computer to be able to compile it.
But yes did work at the end.

and since two year only Debian Laptops

The first time I tried it was when first Lindows OS came. Later the name changed to Linspire because I believe Microsoft sued them so they changed the name. Does anyone remember that distro (version) of Linux?

I used to be given loads of Linux CDs's back then from a friend who was a Microsoft engineer So I can't remember if I tried it or not, after the injunction from Microsoft they changed their name to Linspire, still going but it is not a free download.
