Hello everyone. Just a little bit of introduction. I really am a novice at this OS. I was just bought a laptop and want to install Linux in it. It went all good but somehow i cannot detect any wifi network. However i still can connect to internet through usb tethering using my phone. Ive been browsing all day but still cant find the solution. What am i supposed to do?

Please, pardon my english :)

Regards,
Ghufron

Which release (What number) of Ubuntu has you got?

Open a Terminal. Input
Code:
lspci | grep Network
Copy and paste from here.

What is the result? Copy and paste to here.

Did you try compiling the unofficial firmware (driver? https://github.com/smlinux/rtl8723de

An alternative is to buy a small, cheap wifi dongle e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003MTTJOY/ref=psdc_430581031_t1_B00EZOQFHO

yeah, i did try that, but give me this error
Code:
sudo dkms install rtl8723de/5.1.1.8_21285.20171026_COEX20170111-1414

Kernel preparation unnecessary for this kernel. Skipping...

Building module:
cleaning build area....
'make' all KVER=4.10.0-28-generic.....(bad exit status: 2)
ERROR (dkms apport): binary package for rtl8723de: 5.1.1.8_21285.20171026_COEX20170111-1414 not found
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.10.0-28-generic (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/rtl8723de/5.1.1.8_21285.20171026_COEX20170111-1414/build/make.log for more information.

Hello @haidighufron , and welcome to linux.org :), Hi @arochester :p

The error above is likely because the new firmware relies upon your having a Linux Kernel greater than or equal to 4.11.

Ubuntu 17.10 release (GNOME and MATE)are at 4.13, but installing them is a little dubious, because of a bug with them, see here

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1734147

Other than that, you could try a Linux Distro that has a newer kernel, such as Fedora Workstation 27, which installs at 4.13, then updates to 4.14.

DistroWatch.com often mentions kernels in release notes, and you could look there.

However, if your heart is set on Ubuntu, then the dongle, as suggested by @arochester may be your best bet?

Good luck, and your English seems fine :D
