As Linux users, we are not fans of huge corps using our data for their own profits. I wanted to share my collection of replacement tools because privacy has never been more important than it is today. Apps I use daily are: Signal, Briar, Delta Chat, Tuta Mail

Here's a longer list of European alternatives, as I think they are better than Big Tech.

Operating systems: Linux

Email (web & apps): Tuta Mail

Search Engine: Qwant , Ecosia

Desktop environments: KDE, Cinnamon, Unity, GNOME

Mobile operating systems: /e/ , Sailfish , KDE Plasma Mobile , Ubuntu Touch

Office suite: LibreOffice, OnlyOffice

Cloud storage: Tresorit, Murrena cloud

3D printing: Prusa

Cell phones: Nokia/HMD, Nothing, Gigaset, Fairphone

Computer manufacturers: Star Labs, Tuxedo, Slimbook, Raspberry Pi

CAD: Solidworks

Web browser: Waterfox , Vivaldi , Firefox

Translation: DeepL

VPN: Mullvad , Tor Browser

Social network: Mastodon

Messaging: Signal, Delta Chat, Briar

Your topic seems to be have a policitcal tone to it, politics aren't allowed to be discussed. It would have been better if you left out any specific country and just named options for better privacy and then you could have added to an already exisiting topic which was already about how to regain control and privacy.

Agreed

@xenixt please remove all references that are political before the admin come along and delete it all

UK wants backdoor to your encrypted data.
Sweeden wants the same (although this may not be approved).
EU is censoring stuff it should not.

Point is just picking something does not fix any of the i ternet issues.

Also to the point one can't combine Mulvad VPN with Tor (works with other VPN providers). This is technical issue but again just because this is not "BigTech" (meaning US) is not solving all the problems that uses are facing now.

Reminder to all:

No politics.

That makes some subjects difficult to discuss. That's fine. You can discuss those topics elsewhere on the web.

No point on comparing European countries with the US as some of them can be even worse. Chose services by their principles and their reputation. In this forum most users are aware of the services you listed, we are digitally aware

The topic brings about an interest in the many and various forms of "eyes" which routinely gather info from people, world wide.

The article below gives an idea of just how extensive this is.

So when Firefox or Librewolf etc etc etc tell you your info etc is safe with them.... it is bs. The great majority of info is gathered via ISP's

There is only ONE action that safeguards your info....and that is encryption.....and even then, BOTH sender and receiver of emails MUST be BOTH using encryption.

Good Luck

Then again if your emails cover such rivetting topics as your aunties fruit cake recipe, and the mating habits of the rhesus monkey, you will hopefully fall to a lesser position on their radar

Better to merge this topic with the topic I mentioned earlier since it's basically the same topic idea?

Thanks, Maarten.

Just posted links there.

merging would be a job of work for our Mods & Admins....could be a bit complex

Their call.

No, encryption is not enough.

You had best explain why encryption is unsufficient

Because if a BigTech company has the keys to the encryption used on your data they can decrypt it, meaning they can decrypt your data.

There can be several threads on this topic, no need in my opinion to merge them all in one mega thread that in the the end will make no sense reading it. OCD needs treatment

The encryption in Proton Mail ensures that the provider itself can’t decrypt or read your emails.

Your inbox receives incoming mails from many different sources all around the world, if your provider isn't rigged there is no way to catch all those messages on the fly while they are unencrypted. The benefit of a secure provider is that has no access to your inbox and therefore no one has. In your inbox is the useful information that you want privet. After a decade of use there is almost everything about you in there
