Linux image mint 22.0 or .1 fails to load.

So the saga continues. I downloaded the mint 22.1 iso to a brand new out of the box flash drive. I used balena etcher to verify and make bootable. Ran it once against my laptop and it got to the welcome menu. I selected mint 22.1 and after some indecipherable stuff on the screen it finally loaded the screen on which you have the icon to perform an installation. I didn't, but thought I'm home free because I hadn't got this before. I then went to my desktop machine and tried the same process. I got the welcome screen. When I selected the 22.1 install, the subsequent display first line said 'init line 36 can't find sdb b' then sdb c. Following this, more gibberish, then eventually hangs displaying the linux mint icon.

Computer crashed after severe thunderstorm/power outage.

it's got to be the hardware you're trying to install it on. not sure what else it could be

That 'Welcome menu....looked like the below ?

So, this is the first thing you see after booting to the usb stick ?

'init line 36 can't find sdb b' then sdb c.
Do you have drives named sdb b and sdb c on your pc ?
When I selected the 22.1 install,
How far did the install progress?...past the place where you select language?..... read the following to trace exactly where you got up to:

eg: did you get as far as this screen?

My Tower is plugged in to a power surge protection board and when a thunderstorm is near I disconnect it from the power supply because you can never be too careful.

I have been using the computer when a blackout occurred but no damage was done thanks to the power surge protection board.

That's a good practice to use when it's a bad storm even with a good surge protector.

Back in the early days when storms came around we always unplugged the computer from the power source and from the modem or phone line.

I have an excellent UPS / battery backup I use now although will sometimes power of my computers when storms are a brewing.

I've posted 3 pictures which in order show the attempt to boot. The first is the welcome screen then line init line 36 then can't find many files it wants. It never gets to a screen with the ico. To install linux mint.

Just tried to see if anything else is possible. All that I had on screen was mint logo. However I tried ctl-alt-t, got a terminal screen. Then typed Firefox at the prompt and Firefox popped up.

I'd create a new USB media to boot from.

Use balena etcher.

Download the iso from here.

Obviously the bootable media you are using is not working so most likely corrupted.

There is a chance you have cooked a component on the motherboard or the hard-drive, dos'e it run if you choose compatibility mode?

've posted 3 pictures which in order show the attempt to boot.

Your pictures showed emails, phone numbers, personal names, and what looked like the username for your online health site.

I've removed them from view.

I can¹ put them back up if you ABSOLUTELY want to do that, but I'm going to caution you against doing so. That's personal information that, from the looks of things, doesn't all belong to you. You're putting other names and email addresses (and more) out there in your pictures.

You can use something like Shutter (on Linux) to edit those images to repost them. If you don't have the tools to do that, there are online tools that hopefully don't retain and mine the original images you shared. Automated OCR has come a long way so they wouldn't even need to involve a human to scrape those images for information.

¹ Even if you do want them put back, I'm likely to not make that decision in a vacuum. I'll likely confer with other mods/admins. We may collectively decide to simply not undelete those pictures.

Yeah, my machine is not up yet but I think I've learned my lesson.
Practice what you preach !!
After years of preaching I finally got bit.
Been quite awhile, but I'm back with new information. I've finally got another machine to play with but the behavior is essentially the same.
When I choose the Linux selection which the standard install of 22.1, the machine attempts the installation but then hangs with the Mint logo in the middle of the screen.
If I choose compatibility mode, then it starts a live version of 22.1 with very obviously minimal graphic set. Everything is super big, like 640x480 big. It operates OK, I can get around in Firefox, so it's connected to the internet. There is an option on top left when it starts, to install Linux Mint, just haven't tried that yet.

I assume you ran the checksum and it was OK ?

When you boot to the Live session it may take up to 1 minute but will then go to the Desktop...from there install it.

Don't choose Compatibility Mode...this loads without drivers.

Dell XPS 8300
Would this be the 2011/12 model with the early I7 CPU?, if so the only problem i can think of may be the dated [at time of manufacture] Radeon HD 5870 GPU, the rest is bog-standard dell and should be a piece of cake to install a medium weight [mint LMDE/MX/Linux Lite or similar] distribution

The checksum was OK. When I boot to the Live session, it doesn't go to the desktop (I'm familiar with how long it takes to go to the next step) it hangs and displays the Mint logo. I have installed this before and I'm used to how long it takes.
Compatibility mode is the only way I can get a desktop to work from.

I don't know exactly how old it is. It may be from 2011/12. I got it new from System equipment (office supply co.) somewhere back then.
Given your comments, maybe changing to a lighter distro with less load would solve this.
