Linux kernel multi-boot initrd

I would like to know why it shouldn’t be possible to, while booting Linux, load one initrd image that allows for selecting a route for the boot process to continue on. And, after selecting, load a second initrd image that corresponds to the option that was chosen.
Thus the system could have, say, Arch Linux, Ubuntu, and android installed with a single kernel and an initrd image to allow the user to select the os to boot.

Obviously this method would only be able to boot linux based OSes. However, it would make multibiot on android devices far more feasible.
