where to start?....that is the question.

I dont think I can get this in order....so I have just typed just as they occur to me.

Timeshift ?....yes or no

Backup?....image saved on an external drive?

if he has neither of those, then he has been courting trouble for quite a long time, and his chickens are coming home to roost !

Current problem...software or hardware?....maybe a combination of both.....although with the symptoms it displayed previously, it sounds like hardware......multiple hardware. ....ram....hdd (ssd?)....possible PSU....power supply....any smells?...

Is the capability there to remove the hdd/sdd and run it another pc ?....that would be my first move if saving data is a must...it may end up 'messy', but it could prove to be a lifesaver in some way....hopefully ...!

No, he had trouble with Timeshift a couple of times and it was taking up too much of the drive's space. And doing so very quickly.

No, no smells

He has a backup of his LM 20.2 /home directory.
He could not get his FF bookmarks backed up before the system pooped out on him.
He thinks he can get his LMDE 6 and Sparky Linux /home directories backed up. He'll find that out later today.
He is hoping to use the 2 HDD's and the one SSD plus the Fractal Design case for a new build. He plans on taking the same 3 drives and plugging them into the system (the new build) and boot to each drive which should still have FF on them, along with the bookmarks.

He would do himself a favour by committing to learn about Timeshift. Keeping Timeshift snapshots and OS Images on an external drive is the only safe approach......it saves your bacon every time.

Timeshift will only take up the space that you allow it to. A 2tb external drive used with Timeshift and Rescuezilla works beautifully, and with space to spare. That allows for approx 6 snapshots and 2 or 3 os Images. More than enough when catastrophe strikes.

I really do hope he gets his bookmarks back. I do not use bookmarks, but thoroughly understand the sense of loss, and its effect on the day to day usage.

At this time the only thing my friend can do is contact Amazon for a refund on the ram and start a brand new desktop build in the coming weeks. So...marking this thread solved.
