I currently use Debian 12.5 with XFCE as my primary computer and I think its great. I have an extra computer in which I installed MX Linux earlier this week just to try it out. Its a very slick looking OS and runs nicely on my i3. I want to try out Linux Mint but I read its a lot heavier than MX Linux. If I decide to install Linux Mint should I go with Linux Mint (ubuntu version) or Linux Mint Debian Edition? How does Linux Mint compare with MX Linux (and or Debian 12)?

The computer I intend to install Linux Mint on:
Code:
$ inxi
CPU: dual core Intel Core i3-6100T (-MT MCP-) speed/min/max: 1297/800/3200 MHz
Kernel: 6.1.0-22-amd64 x86_64 Up: 13h 12m Mem: 6546.9/7841.2 MiB (83.5%)
Storage: 476.94 GiB (5.0% used) Procs: 242 Shell: Bash inxi: 3.3.26

I can't say you should or shouldn't. But I'll say this, I installed Mint (Ubuntu) last month on my old 2007(ish) Toshiba laptop. And while it is in no way as fast as the desktop machine I built last fall, it's waaaaay faster than when it had Win8 on it.

What are the specs on your Toshiba laptop? I also had a Toshiba laptop from around 2007 as well. I think it was a Toshiba Satellite. Wish I still had it. It was solid.

The best way to find out is to install it.

if it doesn't rock your boat, give it the flick.

I run an i7 with 32gb ram, Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon.....in my eyes it flies....others may think differently, but its my pc...so what they think doesn't matter

More important to me, is its reliability.....Rock Solid. I can depend on it.

Mx is a well put together distro...good reputation....just not my cup of tea

Debian......any derivative of that is going to be reliable....but I still prefer mint

I have both available on my old Dell laptop and HP desktop , both editions look the same, and work the same, I use LMDE mainly as there is a slight speed advantage [without the Ubuntu bloat] But the average user will probably not notice

@User740985915675054 welcome to linux.org :)

If you tell us how much RAM you have that will be helpful.

I run a large bunch of distros, and may have some helpful info for you.

Oops, got it - 8GB.

That is a large chunk of it being consumed - what were you running on when you gathered those specs?

Firefox open or not?

Ha I was thinking to myself when I posted my specs someone might point that out. Good catch. Yea I had a bunch of Firefox tabs and other applications open when I ran the inxi command so the high RAM usage is nothing to be alarmed about. Do you run MX Linux as well as Linux Mint? If so which one do you prefer?

Hello @User740985915675054
Welcome to Linux.org forum.
I have used all 4 of the distros you mention. Currently using linux mint 21.3. I would say and this is just my opinion That you would do well to stick to debian 12. It's solid and stable. and quite fast. If you go with LMDE you will have the Cinnamon DE by default and Though it is good and I use it here I think with the specs you listed it may be a bit heavy on your resources. so I would suggest Mint xfce or MX or debian they are all good. Mint tends to be a little slower thant the others on my hardware here.
Good luck and do let us know what you choose. Enjoy the journey!

Thank you. I use Debian 12.5 as my primary distro. I have a second machine I currently have MX Linux as a back up for files etc. Just wanted to use it to explore other distros. I heard a lot of good things about Mint so just wanted to get some opinions before I do anything.

Well best thing to do is download Mint and burn it to usb and give it a try live see what you think. Understand that a live session is a bit slower than an installed session. I would try Mint 21.3 first don't download the beta of 22 yet it's still have many bugs to be sorted out before it becomes final.. But most of all enjoy!

Your hardware puts some limits here. If you want something comfortable, use Linux with low resources requirements.
Or use any Linux distro that may or may not perform well.
I would suggest configuring zram or zswap if you hit swap often.

Sorry, been out this morning.
ok so you have an I3 CPU [we consider this entry level CPU]. with 8gb ram makes your machine capable of running any Linux distribution and any desktop YOU want, for everyday computing [office work/surfing/e-mails & Etc] however it doesn't have enough legs for gaming or heavy use [like rendering HD video, HD photons Etc]
Cinnamon desktop may by some is considered Heavey, but from my experience and from many reviews, it is considered mid-weight.
I currently run [on a daily basis] a mix of Mint LMDE, Mint 21 [both with cinnamon] MX-Linux, and Parrot home edition, on both my desktop [2105 HP with intel i5 4th gen,] and laptop [intel duo T series 2008] both with 8gb ram speed wise there is little difference between LMDE, MX,& Parrot Mint21 is a tad slower [Ubuntu bloat] but Joe Average would not notice
if you are only a typical light home user, then I would not even bother with a swap file but if you want one as a comfort blanket make sure it is the same or bigger than your total Ram
Understand that a live session is a bit slower than an installed session
What my associate @kc1di is correct, running any distribution in"Live" test mode, is not as fast as a fully installed distribution, BUT it does give you the chance to see if you like it and if it will run on your hardware,

Here is my list of how desktops stack up to RAM usage - some may agree or disagree this is IMHO

Light weight desktops - LXLE, LXDE, Xfce
Mid weight desktops - Cinnamon, Gnome, Mate, Budgie, Moshka
Heavy weight desktops - KDE Plasma, Deepin, Enlightenment, Pantheon

I'm running Linux Mint Cinnamon on a 12 year old Laptop with 4GB of Ram and of course a 500GB SSD...it's fast and doesn't have any problems.

It does have an i5 CPU and is 64bit...I've never understood why some say Cinnamon is resource heavy as I've never found that to be true. I at one time had Linux Lite on my Laptop and then switched to Mint Cinnamon...didn't notice any difference.

Once I get bored of MX Linux I do plan on giving Mint a shot but I am a XFCE person and the XFCE setup in MX is quite nice. In fact I took some of their modifications and applied it to my Debian computer and now I prefer Debian (XFCE) even more to everything else I tried so far.
