I'm also curious as to why we don't embrace tech in this area. The LUGs don't have to meet in person for everything. We have acceptable video chat options, for example. Heck, assuming the end-user has multiple devices you can talk 'em through installing Linux via chat.
A weekly/bi-weekly type of online gathering that's open for the globe might be a positive thing. You can even have them aimed at local users. Inviting the entire global community isn't a requirement.
