I'm a Windows user, trying to get into Linux. Peppermint 4, to be exact. I've already set aside some unallocated space on my drive for the system, but when I boot into it and try to install, It doesn't recognize any of my partitions, or even that I already have Windows on the PC. Therefore, it won't give me the "Run along side" option. Please help.

Aro's article highlights the issue. You have to actually format that unallocated space to make use of it. Gparted is a good tool to use for this

If you are just looking to try linux install it on Virtualbox. It will run faster than it will from a live cd, and you can test out multiple distro's easily without formatting, burning dvd's etc.

I use grub2 to as my bootloader, it allows you to add other operating systems on other partitions. I'm guessing Windows would run just fine but its not something I like doing, I use a separate computer for windows.
