I tried to login but was told I was using the wrong password. When I click forgot password was told user name didn't exist. When I tried to register was told my user name already existed. Well which is it? I had to create a new user name. Your login in stinks. Shouldn't be this hard.

G'day pilots72, Welcome to Linux.org

I love this : ""Your login in stinks"" :D

Now we have that out of the way, more info please.

Laptop or desktop
Make and model?....not so important if a desktop, but if you have it it may be useful
Specs. hard drive or ssd, ram, cpu ?....whatever you can find

Important: which Linux?....version, example...Linux Mint, Cinnamon...21.3 .......

Have you just installed this?

Is it a dual boot with windows ?....or just on its own

Tell us the story

Not sure why you need some of that info but I'll give you what I have.I'm on a Lenovo Yoga laptop which I love. I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.3 only. No dual boot. It runs flawlessly.
SSD 990 PRO 1TB size: 931.51 GiB speed: 63.2 Gb/s, 11th Gen Intel Core i7-1165G7 bits: 64, 12Gb memory.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the speedy reply.

@Condobloke I think he means the login to the forums, not his Linux system
Well !!!....that serves me right for not reading the entire blurb !!

My apologies @pilots72, (Kirk ) for my 'too much haste, not enough pay attention.....

The guys above have more patience than I......and have done the job correctly

In the meantime, open linux.org, ....then click on members
1721173220908.png

On the left hand side you will see a "find member' box...... type your ORIGINAL user name in there....when/if it comes up .....right click and copy the url address up in the address bar. Paste it here
if your original username does not appear then the registration process has come unhinged somewhere, which is unusual !....and sadly you will need to wait for one of the mods/Admin to interceded and fix the rotten thing.

In the meantime you can log in with your current username and take a look around, and see how many more blunders I can pull out of the hat this morning.

BUT YOU ARE LOGGED IN AREN@T YOU!!

Agreed - @Caluser2000 - the Member had to create a new userid, that worked, and that is why he is logged in now.

Moving this to Forum Assistance.

Ok, I was trying to Login to the Linux.org web site. There was my issue. I did as suggested and found my original user name. I copied and pasted in a new tab and am logged in I think. Thanks for all the help. That's what I love about Linux that everyone is willing to help. Have been a dedicated user for 3 years. Love love love Linux.

I would suggest password manager:
Generate login/password in password manager, apply these credentials to the forum where you want to be a member and at least typos are out of your way.

Otherwise, I would assume typos. If problem persists, then the next thing is your browser.

If you have this kind of issues, unfortunately you should "blame" yourself.
