Hi linux users,
I have big issues with Linux installation on my Swift 3 SF314-51 (i5 6200u). I've tested lots of distributions, all from different families (Fedora, Debian, Arch and derivates), I've tested different kernels, from 4.19 to 5.9 but my laptop starts having systematic freeze everytime. Some issues are after resume from suspension, ones like unresponsive keyboard or global freeze after login, other issues are (maybe) related to wireless card (Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174), all starts with network down (it seems while streaming in a browser), network services unresponsive to restart commands and general operative systems lags in apps, touchpad. Windows runs perfect on this laptop, Linux is a whole fail. Any suggestion for me?
Thanks you

Let's start here:

What distro do you have currently installed?

Have you checked the logs after rebooting from a freeze?

What browser are you using when it freezes while streaming?

Here's a neat trick. If you want to know if your computer is frozen or just busy, press the Caps Lock key. If the caps lock key works, the computer isn't actually frozen. It may be in the process of freezing, but it's not frozen yet.

Hi KGIII,
today I did a fresh installation of Fedora 33, all packages updated and upgraded kernel to 5.9 v. I have experienced those issues with Firefox, today not yet and now I'm on Chromium. I have read about that trick, but my caps lock key hasn't got a led status and when keyboard freezes is until the next suspension (forced closing and opening display, sometimes that doesn't work either). At the next freeze I'll check dmesg, or journalctl, but I'm not experienced with these commands and I don't know where to look.

With Fedora, it's going to pull in a bunch of other stuff, but it's worth it - just to make it easier on you.

Code:
sudo yum install ksystemlog

This will install a fantastic GUI tool to check your logs. Now, it needs elevated permissions, so you're going to start it from the terminal with:

Code:
sudo kystemlog

At this point, you're good - but you'll notice that it keeps adding stuff and that it keeps trying to make you scroll to the bottom. So, in the upper left, you can click 'stop' and then go back through the logs above, checking for errors - likely helpfully colored red.

You're looking for things that stand out. You're looking for warnings. You can also hit the start button (in the app) and resume loading the logs automatically.

You can delete the application later, or keep it installed. It's only something like 150 mb of disk space after installation.

I was watching Twitch on Chromium, I paused the streaming and I went away, suspension started and after wake up, just 5 minutes and network freezed, unresponsive to restart commands. So I logged out from session for a try, but log in failed and system freezed totally. Before logging out i saved partial dmesg and systemlog. I don' now if there are private data in these logs, so i put some warnings and errors here. It's a bad situation I can't work with linux for now.

Indeed. Your driver for your wireless card keeps crashing. I could see why that'd be frustrating and would make Linux unusable for you.

For that, I'd look for alternative drivers. You'd have to blacklist the drivers in the kernel and add those.

There's also something else that I'd try and it's deceptively simple. Open Chrome/Chromium, go to settings, and disable hardware acceleration. After that, restart the browser.

See, that option shouldn't even be in Chrome/Chromium. HA doesn't work with Linux and Google has no plans on making it work. Yet, the option not only exists, it's enabled by default. Most of the time, this is pretty harmless. Once in a while, it causes the strangest [redacted]in' bugs that are inconsistent and pervasive. Disabling HA makes 'em go away.

Qualcomm Atheros....... explains a lot! The atheros drivers have always been a bit buggy!
And the ath10k drivers are no exception, it seems:

Might be worth taking a look at this and see where your network card is listed. Perhaps it’s a model with known problems:

Mmm I'll try, but for now I've replaced drivers manually from https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware/tree/master/QCA6174 as suggested, thanks to both of you . It's strange though, how a single bugged driver may lead the whole system to crash?

The disabling hardware acceleration is for your other symptoms, not for the wireless adapter symptoms.

I probably could have made that more clear. That's for the freezing and whatnot. The drivers is likely an entirely different issue, so I was addressing both.

Ok, I have understood. After drivers update and hours using the PC, surfing the web and test playing videos and live streamings on two browser at the same time, the network didn't freeze yet. Keyboard and cursor freezed one time after resume from suspension on RAM (hibernation is disabled). I had to force suspend closing the lid,I think that issue was with sddm and there are thousands of these red errors in logs
Screenshot_20201217_194441.png

A second freezing of whole system happened after a session restart because I had to apply some settings to plasma, but I can't find errors in logs, I only know the time it happened, more or less.

4 kernel updates yesterday after last occurred freezing, several suspensions, hours of use and no more issues, for now at least.

Code:
Pacchetti modificati:
    Installati kernel-5.9.14-200.fc33.x86_64 @updates
    Installati kernel-core-5.9.14-200.fc33.x86_64 @updates
    Installati kernel-modules-5.9.14-200.fc33.x86_64 @updates
    Installati kernel-modules-extra-5.9.14-200.fc33.x86_64 @updates

I have spoken too soon, keyboard issue on login screen still occurs sometimes. It's okay, at least doesn't crash everything like before.

I have spoken too soon, keyboard issue on login screen still occurs sometimes. It's okay, at least doesn't crash everything like before.

Solved!
I have added these kernel options for controller i8042 in /etc/default/grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet i8042.reset i8042.nomux"

Here their function description from kernel.org:
Code:
i8042.reset [HW] Reset the controller during init, cleanup and
                 suspend-to-ram transitions, only during s2r
                 transitions, or never reset
            Format: { 1 | Y | y | 0 | N | n }
            1, Y, y: always reset controller
            0, N, n: don't ever reset controller
Default: only on s2r transitions on x86; most other
architectures force reset to be always executed
i8042.nomux [HW] Don't check presence of an active multiplexing
                 controller
I found this "solution" on many forums and reddit, the second (.nomux) solved the keyboard and touchpad issues, but I can't understand why.

Hi,
I would like to update my post. Ath10k driver update did't fix network systematic crashes, I finally replaced the Atheros QCA6174 with an Intel AX200 and now network works fine!

Qualcomm Atheros....... explains a lot! The atheros drivers have always been a bit buggy!
And the ath10k drivers are no exception, it seems:
You where right, Atheros = bugs! (at least for my old wifi card)
