Midori Browser

using LM22

ahhh....so there may be light at the end of that tunnel !

Interesting to note...I am not missing brave at all

I have a feeling it will work for you......I still get this 'vibe' that I need a clean install with 22.1

@ponchale - Alfonso, welcome to linux.org :)

I will likely have some questions, too, on Midori, hope you do not mind.

First one is

Q. I note that the installation and first use of Midori generates a file in $HOME/.config

/.midori/<name_of_profile>.default-release/datareporting/glean/db

Perhaps you could just explain what the function is of that database?

NOTE TO MEMBERS: Please don't hit the panic button over this, I have no fears over it. Wizard.

I have midori install here on LM 22.1 beta also, no problems it retain my settings just fine. It is faster than Brave. I usually use Vivaldi but they are having problems at this time with their sync servers so have been trying out other Browser and midori is a good one for a replacement. Will keep testing it see if it will win a permanent place in my line up of software.

There are two midori browsers:
and

Astian midori browser is the copy of floorp
.and if true these guys at Astian aren't nice
Floorp browser:
..because Floorp is derived from Firefox and Astian Midori from Floorp then these comments make sense:
"Midori is a fork of Floorp, which is a fork of Firefox.

Floorp lags behind Firefox releases for security updates (but decent enough), and Midori lags behind Floorp."

No Astian Midori browser for me

I used Midori browser way back when using Antix Linux or Puppy Linux may have been both of them.

I also believe Midori did not run java script although I may be wrong about that.

I remember Midori took a little while to get the hang of using but it was okay.

Is it Chrome or Firefox based?

The existence of that folder is actually inherited from our Gecko/Firefox base but it has no function since all the telemetry to Mozilla has stopped, except for one the sync service has not stopped because we are still developing our own sync service, no telemetry and no tracking and also open source everything is in our repository.

I hope I have answered your question my dear friend.

We are aware of our origin, but my dear friend Ubuntu was born from Debian, Nextcloud was born from OwnCloud, Bliss was born from AOSP, and as many examples, the Floorp license supports us as well as the Mozilla license and any open source license, are seeing the difference I will tell you the differences.

  1. We developed our own search engine so as not to expose users' privacy.
  2. We have removed the Google API from Midori, we no longer send data to Google through their Browser Safe API.
  3. For more than a year we have been working on our own synchronization service removing Mozilla's by default.
  4. We are developing our own VPN service See our repository.
  5. We are developing productivity tools that revolve around Midori, Notes, Contacts, Cloud, Calendar, all open source, no sale of information no tracking completely free and we do not plan to close the code of any of our services.
  6. We don't fight with other browsers regardless of their origin or their base, on the contrary we are fighting with the big techs so that the small ones have a chance, we recently joined the Browser Choice Alliance.
  7. The market is a vast blue ocean, meaning there is opportunity for everyone.
Thank you.

In the settings gear.

A deal killer imo is a user has to create an account to use these settings.

In the settings gear.

The deal killer is the fact that a user has to create an account to use these settings.

Why must a user have to create an account to use any settings.

I love your question and it is a very objective question, the user has to create an account, as we said, one of the big problems today are cookies, they are used for all kinds of things, from saving simple configurations to computer attacks, tracking, profiling etc, how can we avoid the use of cookies in our services? We are going to suggest to users that they create an account so that preferences are saved, it is revolutionary yes, but we will have an advantage since well it is our proposal to put an end to cookies that have done much harm to the web.

In order to guarantee transparency we have opened the code, and we have lightened it in a license that allows any type of user, expert or not, to deploy the resource in their infrastructure, so in the future, a user will be able to deploy their own instance of Sync and share Midori with Sync, Notes, Calendar, Contacts, with Sync very similar to Nextcloud.

I hope I have answered your question.

""To access these features"" etc etc.....
I admit to being a tad intrigued......so I hit the sign in button/icon....and was taken to a sign in page for Mozilla.
I already have a Mozilla account...i have had one for a long time....So....I signed in. All perfectly straightforward.

Now when I click on the hamburger icon/application menu.....It shows my name at the top.

Does this mean that the browser now saves settings?....because until now it has not been able to open initially as a maximised page and more than a few of its settings which I have changed have not "stuck"....eg, the new tab page ...its appearance has altered now I have 'signed in'.....but I am still unable to add shortcuts to it, that I need to have there
Actually, I take that back. After signing in, it would appear that the below...

now saves sites that I visit...eg Linux org etc etc.........this is good. It is not clear from reading the information provided, that this is the case......that needs to be made crystal clear .

Now, @ponchale ....the Mozilla account. Do I understand this correctly, that a connection to the Mozilla account will change?

If so, when, and will the terms be similar to Mozillas?......if not what will those terms be ?.

If cookies are not used...why is this setting required

On the new tab page....when it is opened....to get the three little dots.....see below pic

....there should be three small dots present
They do not appear unless the page is refreshed

The three dots give access to a menu...as per pic below

Just a bit of homework for the developers to attend to

EDIT TO ADD:
I just opened a new tab page. I have discovered that while the three dots do not appear, If I hover the mouse in that corner it shows "open menu" ....which is what I want to do
For me that is good enough because I know it is there. It needs some clarity for those who do not know.

Yes, the Mozilla account will be replaced by the Astian account, what are the terms, end-to-end encryption, open source, no tracking, possibility of synchronizing all the information of Astian products and services, and more, when? Well, we don't have an official date yet, but we are building it step by step.
