I have a Linux machine in a location where the wifi signal is weak.

The machine doesn't need much bandwidth. Normally the wifi switches speed depending on the signal strength. Is there a way to lock the wifi bandwidth to the lowest setting, to improve reliability? Is there something else (software-wise) I can do to increase reliability?

My wifi adapter is an Alfa AWUSO36NH USB Wireless G.

I'd try relocating the router to a different location and see if that makes any difference and it may take several tries before reaching an improved signal.
