Hi all,

I am trying to dual boot ubuntu 22.04 for use with ROS2 and issac sim on my MSI laptop. I have tried to install on both a portable SSD and internal partition but every time I boot I get a black screen after seeing the ubuntu and MSI logo. I think the issue issue is perhaps MOK key related.

Very frustrating!

This is my first time posting on a forum; I hope some one has a solution

Best,

AB

When you see the black screen, have you tried pressing F8 to see what the boot process is doing behind the scenes?

That may give you a clue.

Hi sorry for belated reply. Its literally just a black screen. Pressing f8 doesn't show me anything. I have attached a video hope that helps.

Have you turned off windows quick-start? if not, do so and do a full power re-boot [not a windows re-start]helps
and see if that helps

MOK Manager would generate an error. Not black screen
"Verification failed: (0x1A) Security Violation"
or similar.

I would suspect video but with overwelming information that OP provided about his hardware it is hard to guess ;

Not sure why but I was able to boot from GRUB using advanced settings option (there was 2 versions of Linux there; each with their own recovery mode.) Had to install graphics drivers using terminal. Found a way to boot now so happy days, dare not trying to boot straight into ubuntu.

I'm running on MSI Stealth 16 AI studio. RTX 4070, i7 ultra something, 32gb ram. Booting from external SSD.

the first is the latest kernel upgrade, the second is the last kernel that worked, if it boots ok from the second one then make it the default, there is nothing wrong with using an older kernel

I had to look up that computer, especially about its AI capabilities (which gemini.google.com nicely explained). That's quite a machine!

It's a beast, bought it as a work station for my PhD project. I was surprised to run the nvidia compatibility checker and found it meets only meets the minimum system requirements for isaac sim!
