Solved Need help installing new mouse pointer

Solved issue
In an attempt to solve this I down loaded the package Gamma.Gold.1-1.tar.tar, unzipped and then as root copied and pasted into usr/share/icons folder. This is the same method I've used in the past with cursor themes from "gnome-look.org". The Gamma.Gold cursor shows in the cursor selection but is not select-able (ie. does not work). Perhaps the package is broken. FYI I run debian stable with XFCE desktop.

Deeply appreciate the reply's gentlemen;
Alexzee;
Isn't that what we did in post #7?
Sorry, but are you saying that I need to perform these procedures as root in the command line of terminal. I don't know how to become root in terminal.
If you are talking about the file directory, I've done that several times.

Brickwizard;
No, I had not previously ran the installer command (didn't know about it). However, if you look at the pling page, there is an install button. What I have tried is to download the file, then hit install - seems to download and I presume install the file, except it obviously hasn't worked for me.

Secondly; On pling there is this install helper -
which I have downloaded and installed, and isn't helping unless I did/didn't do something.

Thirdly; I entered your command sudo ./install-ubuntu.sh and got this return;

gryphon777@amd-ThinkPad-P17-Gen-1:~$ sudo ./install-ubuntu.sh
[sudo] password for gryphon777:
sudo: ./install-ubuntu.sh: command not found
gryphon777@amd-ThinkPad-P17-Gen-1:~$

I'm reminded of Edison who when ridiculed for trying 10,000 times to invent the light bulb and failing said; "I've not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways it won't work."

Thanks again guys!
Yes so there is no need t perform the task again; as it is already in the directory it should be in.

What is the output of this in your terminal?
Code:
cd Downloads Press Enter
Then you get yourname@Downloads
Then type ls and Press Enter

Then go to your file system and take a screenshot of your /usr/share/icons/ directory....post it here when you can.
I took a screenshot of mine showing that Gamma Gold is in my /usr/share/icons/ directory.

Like you I down loaded the pkg Gamma.Gold and moved it to my /usr/share/icons directory with elevated privileges and it works on my Debian 12 Mate stable install. It shows in the Custome Theme window and the working Gamma Gold mouse pointer is shown to the right above 'Screensaver'.

See the screenshot--

gryphon777@amd-ThinkPad-P17-Gen-1:~$ mv Gamma.Gold ~/.fonts
mv: cannot stat 'Gamma.Gold': No such file or directory
gryphon777@amd-ThinkPad-P17-Gen-1:~$
You have to do that from the directory where "Gamma.Gold" is actually located in. For example something like this.
Full path.
Code:
~$  mv ~/Downloads/Gamma.Gold ~/.fonts
Or from the directory where it's located.
Code:
mv
~/Downloads$ mv Gamma.Gold ~/.fonts

Thanks, it did create the directory, but it only contains a document labeled .uuid
From what I can tell it has to do with your fontcache, I think if a new cache is generated that font directory gets a new cache uuid.

When he moved it to his /usr/share/icons/ directory the Linux Mint Settings MGR should show it.
From what I know if you place icons or cursors manually, you have to run "fc-cache -f" to refresh your font cache for you to be able to see them in the appearance settings, terminal, etc. If you install a font using your package manager that is run on that background while installing the package.

I can get it to show up in the theme selection for mouse and the theme works with Firefox 134 but shows as default theme(Adwaita) on the desktop. As "f33dm3bits" points out it is likely a missing dependency. Also the package Gamma.Gold was last updated 7 years ago. For me, running fc-cache -f removed the file from the icons folder and placed it in the usr/share folder.

@f33dm3bits :-

Maarten, I'm confused here. I don't understand why you keep talking about fonts when the thread is about cursors....

(It's Monday morning, mate. Perhaps I've got hold of the wrong end of the stick....I'm really not "with it" yet! :) )

lol you are right it's about cursors, the thing is with cursor themes you also place them in the "fonts" directory which makes it confusing, especially on a monday morning.

@MikeWalsh
Its ok mate, its Monday morning and Maarten could never get the hang of Mondays :D

Gamma.Gold is a beautiful cursor theme. On Linux Mint I've 1) unpacked the archive (v1.1) to my home dir, 2) then moved the Gamma.Gold dir to /usr/share/icons, 3) then, for convenience, generated the 'cursors/thumbnail.png' preview file.
Step 2:
Code:
sudo mv ~/Gamma.Gold /usr/share/icons

My apologies for the late reply. I had a busy Tuesday and I did not realize that this had gone to a second page. I thought everyone had given up a moved on. My fault entirely.
So I have gone through the posts and will answer in order.
Sorry, I can't do anything about Monday! You do realize that the only day worse than Friday the 13th, is Monday the 13th!

Alexzee...

mv: invalid option -- '/'
Try 'mv --help' for more information.
gryphon777@amd-ThinkPad-P17-Gen-1:~$ -/Downloads$ mv Gamma.Gold -/.fonts

Yes, that is exactly what I am dealing with, I'm glad its not just me.

Maybe it is just too old for the more recent LM forks, but from what I understand about Linux it should still be able to work as others have had success.

However, If this is the case, then I would be equally pleased with /home/gryphon777/Downloads/bronze-hfn-constantine cursor package if that is easier to accomplish and do not have to go through gnome-look.org.

I got it from here:

What does everyone think?

I do want to thank everyone for their time and efforts, it is more deeply appreciated than I can express. It can't be easy trying to explain this to a confused beginner. But then, what else would you do now that it is past Monday?!

Thanks

Thanks for the output.

Your Downloads directory confirms that Gamma.Gold.1-1.tar.tar is still there which means that Gamma.Gold was moved to your /usr/share/icons/directory.

Why the cursor theme shows in your icons directory and the fact that you can't select it is odd I'd say.

When you have time, Gryphon 2580, watching this YouTube video will give you knowledge .I found it to be helpful for Linux Mint 21 with the Cinnamon DE.

To take a screenshot go to your Linux Mint Menu on the desktop and in the search type: screenshot.
It should save it to your Pictures directory or to a Screenshot directory.

Thanks for being patient with me, I've had the flu the last 3 days.:(

Thank you for the tutorial. I will study it.
Take all the time you need and get well. That crap is no fun!

Tips for seniors? How did you know!! Was it that obvious!!

You're welcome.
Crap indeed friend and I'm not a spring chicken anymore so there's that too.

I borrowed the crystal ball from @wizardfromoz and had a glimpse.

Thanks for the tuturoial. I have gone over it about 5 times.
I went into all my folders and deleted all the Gamma.Gold files and any other packs from downloads, icons, user/share/icons, and anything else I could find. Then downloaded all new files, extracted, set up and moved to new "cursors" folder, set up second window, drag & drop - same results. I've tried dragging to both Home/.icons as in the video and /usr/share/icons, both times as root. Something is just not talking to something else.

Thinking out loud:
It seems that since LM 21.1 came out, there has been a few bugs that have arisen. I have another problem I need to resolve, but I'm reluctant to dive into just yet. Is there away to reinstall/refresh LM 21 over the exiting install without having to do a complete clean install? Would I be better off to upgrade to LM22? What about time shifting back to the original and starting over? Should I consider a different distro - Ubuntu, LMDE, Debian? Like I said in the beginning, this is on a refurbished laptop and was suppose to be a clean install. Not knocking anyone, but did something hiccup in that process? It's just odd the the cursors show up in one world but not the other. If I'm wrong, please educate me. What does everyone advise?

Your welcome.

Whatever those bugs are that rose up in LM 21 'may be' contributing to the issue's your having with trying to use that cursor theme. The configuration may have become mis-configured which would explain why the cursor theme shows in one place but not the other. So, yes, something could have very well hiccuped indeed.
It's happened to me. :)

Those know issues with LM 21 are here if you'd like to read them.

There is a way to attempt to fix things however, learning how to 'chroot into the system', Enter into 'Recovery Mode' <or> running fsck could help. Those task can be a tad tricky and in depth if one hasn't performed those things before. Often times, it's easier to perform a fresh installation.

Before you consider a different distro you would want to know the computer requirements for the distro you'd want to install over top of LM 21. Like here for example:

* Also, knowing the spec's of the refurbished machine you have is equally important in your decision on considering another distro.*

If you have the time, post the spec's (Exact make and model) of your laptop and I'll see if I can find the motherboard manual and other info. on it.

Hey, are you feeling any better?
Well I had the idea that upgrading to LM 21.3 might overwrite the program and fix the corrupted whatever it is. Well, that didn't work!
So, I think I am going to install LM 22 and start over. It seems to be a good distro, fairly stable, and more refined. Doubt that I will need all the bells and whistles, I just want something that works, but I shouldn't have to upgrade anything for a long time. Probably tackle it tomorrow or Sunday. If it goes well, I might upgrade my desktop as well while I'm at it.

Anyone have any advise, precautions, suggestions, or input?

You asked about the spec's of my laptop. It is a Lenovo P17 Thinkpad with:

Feel a little better sometimes and than feel bad again. The cough and the congestion is really bad.

Really nice laptop!

I suggest reading through the installation guide here:

Once you have the Linux Mint 22 .iso downloaded, verify the integrity of the .iso. Very important step to verify it or you could be installing from a corrupt .iso.

You can use balena etcher or the usb writer that comes with Mint to make the usb thumb drive Live with .iso for your install. OR> you could burn the .iso image to a CD/DVD.

Best wishes for your fresh installation.

GOT IT........Sort Of!

Hope you are feeling better and getting over the snot-rocket vacation.

Well I upgraded and installed LM 22.
Using the USB Writer is amazingly easy and I think FAR superior to using etcher or some other writer! I found a YT video from PulsarTECH that gives very concise and clear instructions. I went over the above Seniors video a couple more times and followed his instruction.

Problem is that I still get Gamma.Gold on Firefox and a common cursor on LM......no change - same as above!
So for grins, tried downloading a different cursor (Gold 2) and it works perfectly. Overall, its a nice cursor and I can live with it. I presume that Gamma.Gold is too old or has become corrupted. I know that there used to be a lot more options on the Pling site and I worder if some stuff got hacked or there is some corruption in the downloader or who-knows-what?

Anyway, I'm going to call this solved and move on.
Thanks to everyone who posted for your time and knowledge (especially on Monday!)

LOL!

Glad to hear your fresh installation went well and you found a cursor theme that you can live with.

I have a few ideas on this old version of the Gamma.Gold cursor theme. I have it working on my Debian 12 Mate system and it works well on FF.
There may be old libraries that are not playing nice with newer versions of other packages/libs that are tied to certain desktop environments. There could be missing libs (engines) that are not installed to make the cursor theme appear as it should on the system it's self. And, lastly maybe some missing dependencies. I've learned this over and over again from experience running Slackware.

Have a great week ahead and enjoy your new LM 22!

Yeah, I was thinking about it last night and somewhere between LM20 and LM21, some kind of coding was left out, changed, or put in.
Now we need some people, much smarter than me, to reconstruct some of these.
